Carrying your baby close in a sling can give stimulation and soothe. For the safety of your baby, you need to know the best way to wear a sling.
In March, two slings by manufacturer Infantino were recalled after a warning from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Parents were told to immediately stop using Infantino’s SlingRider (pictured) and Wendy Bellissimo models, both of which are bag-style designs (a mini hammock around the front of your body).
In bag-style slings, the deep pouch where your baby lies puts them in a potentially suffocating curved or ‘C’-like position. The slings typically have excessive fabric with an elasticated edge, which could cover the baby’s face and compromise the airway. The design of the sling may also cause the baby’s face to turn in toward the adult’s body, potentially smothering the baby.
