Sleeping with a baby on the sofa has resulted in 25 deaths in two years
The Foundation for the Study for Infant Death (FSID) has warned of the dangers of falling asleep with your baby on the sofa. Over the last two years, 25 babies have died while sleeping on the sofa with an adult.
Despite the dangers, parents are still falling asleep with their babies, increasing the risk of sudden or unexplained death. Joyce Epstein, FSID director said, “More lives could be saved, if every parent, carer and grandparent recognised that while a sofa may be a comfortable place for them to sleep it is the most dangerous place for a baby.”
Department of health guidelines remain that the safest place for a newborn to sleep up to 6 months is in his own cot with a responsible adult in the room.
