Oliver knocks Jack off the No 1 boys name spot

Oliver has become the nation's most popular name for newborn boys, ending Jack’s 14 year reign

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) has compiled an official list of the top 100 baby names for boys and girls, featuring all births in 2009 in England and Wales.

For boys, top of the list was Oliver, followed by Jack in second place.  Topping the girls' name list for the second year running was Olivia, followed by Ruby and Chloe.

The top 10 boys names for 2009 were: Oliver, Jack, Harry, Alfie, Joshua, Thomas, Charlie, William, James and Daniel.  See the full top 100 boys' names.

For girls, the top 10 names were: Olivia, Ruby, Chloe, Emily, Sophie, Jessica, Grace, Lily, Amelia and Evie.

The list also shows the Muslim name Mohammed, in 16th place.  However, there are twelve listed variations of the name.  When combined they actually show Mohammed to be the top boy's name of 2009. Regionally Mohammed is the most popular boys name in the West Midlands.

A total of 7,549 newborn boys were given one of the 12 variations of Mohammed, in 2009:

  3. Mohammad  1,073
  4. Muhammed  515
  5. Mohamed     387
  6. Mohamad     33
  7. Muhamed     27
  8. Mohammod  18
  9. Mahamed     14
  10. Muhamed    10

  12. Mommed     4


Celebrity baby names also entered the list as 1,012 babies were named Kai, after Coleen and Wayne Rooney’s little boy, ranking in 68th place.

One of the most popular celeb families was the Beckham’s.  In 2009 alone, 282 boys were named Brooklyn, 78 Romeo, and 73 were named Cruz.

The top 100 list also had six new entries for boys: Aiden, Arthur, Frederick, Jude, Stanley and Austin, and three new entries for girls: Heidi, Mya and Sara.
