Singing a lullaby is a great way for you to bond with your baby and to help them feel relaxed and get ready for sleep.
In fact, it's such a natural thing to sing a lullaby to soothe a baby that people have been doing it for generations: the oldest known lullaby was written by an ancient Babylonian in around 2000 BC.
It's pretty magical, isn't it, to think that the sound of your voice has such power to relax and calm your baby? And that, if you repeat your favourite lullabies every bedtime, your baby will start to associate your singing with calming down and going to sleep.
Even more amazingly, studies have shown that singing lullabies can help your baby's early language development¹ and improve emotional and behavioural regulation².
But, of course, the lullaby has to come from you. "Babies are particularly responsive when the music comes directly from the parent," says Sally Goddard Blythe, a consultant in neuro-developmental education and the author of The Genius of Natural Childhood. "Your baby doesn't care how well or badly you sing: they just love to hear your voice."

1. Hush Little Baby
The earliest recorded rendition of Hush Little Baby is from 1918 but, like many traditional and famous lullabies, the origins of this sweet lullaby are unknown. There are many different versions of the lyrics; we've included the most common one here.

2. Rock-a-bye Baby
Although first published in Mother's Goose's Melody in 1765, there are multiple theories about where Rock-a-bye Baby originates — including that it was the first English poem written on American soil, that the baby represents the Egyptian deity Horus and that it's related to the reign of King James II.

3. Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star
One of the most famous lullaby songs, Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star is sung to the French melody Ah! vous dirai-je, maman. Its lyrics are taken from The Star, an early 19th-century poem written by Jane Taylor, which expresses the tenderness and love between a parent and baby as they look at the night sky together.

4. Frère Jacques
This nursery rhyme of French origin is sometimes known in English as Brother John. It's about a friar who has overslept and is ordered to wake up and sound the bell for prayer. This is another famous lullaby with unknown origins, but the first version of the melody was found on a French manuscript from around 1780.

Traditional lullaby songs
These time-honoured lullaby songs have been sung by parents to help their babies sleep for centuries and for good reason. They're tender, soothing and many have traditional Welsh, Scottish and Irish roots.
5. Brahms Lullaby/Cradle Song
Inspired by Des Knaben Wunderhorn, a collection of German folk poems, this sweet lullaby was written by Johannes Brahms in 1868. He dedicated it to his friend Bertha Faber on the birth of her second son. Since then, it's been covered and recorded by many artists including Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra.

6. All the Pretty Little Horses
The exact origin of All the Pretty Little Horses is unknown, but it's commonly thought to be an African-American lullaby. It's a calming song with simple lyrics, which makes it an excellent choice for sleep-deprived parents to remember.

7. Danny Boy
Danny Boy is a traditional Irish folk song written by an English lawyer and lyricist in 1910. It is set to the Irish melody Londonderry Air. There are various theories as to what the song is about, but nonetheless it's a stirring song that, when sung slowly and peacefully, works well as a lullaby.

8. Speed Bonnie Boat (Skye Boat Song)
Speed Bonnie Boat is a late 19th century Scottish adaptation of the Gaelic song Cuachag nan Craobh (meaning Cuckoo of the Tree) that was composed in 1782. The lyrics to the Scottish version are about a journey made by Charles Edward Stuart ('Bonnie Prince Charlie'). It has since been used in popular culture, including in TV shows and is even sung by some football fans.

10. All Through the Night (Ar Hyd y Nos)
All Through The Night was originally a Welsh song called Ar Hyd y Nos. It has been translated into many languages, including English, and the version we have below was written by Sir Harold Boulton in 1884. Since then, it's appeared in films, television shows and even video games.

This Irish-American song was written in 1913 and became famous when Bing Crosby sang it in 1944.

The earliest record of Row, Row, Row Your Boat is from 1852 and it has similar lyrics to the ones we know today, but with a very different tune. The modern melody was first recorded in 1881 and it is this version that has become the well-known lullaby sung around the world today. Dating back to the early 19th century, this traditional nursery rhyme actually has much deeper roots — the superstition for hoping for wishes when seeing a shooting star comes from the ancient world.

14. Lavender's Blue
This traditional English folk song is believed to have originated in the 17th century.

16. The Grand Old Duke of York
The Grand Old Duke of York is a traditional English nursery rhyme, first published in 1642 as Old Tarlton's Song. It's not known which particular Duke of York the song refers to and many candidates have been put forward over the years. Several variants of the song have been found, but the modern lyrics that most of us know and sing today were published in 1913.

17. Three Blind Mice
First published in 1609, Three Blind Mice is a famous nursery rhyme and lullaby that has had many variations over the years. The most commonly-used lyrics are below.

It's sung to the tune of the eighteenth-century French melody Ah! vous dirai-je, maman — the same as Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star and the Alphabet Song.
