New research shows baby's sleep problems could continue with age

It’s no secret that sleepless nights go hand in hand with having a baby, but whilst we hope they grow out of, it seems it could just be wishful thinking.

According to a new study, babies found to have sleeping problems are more likely to continue to have difficulties when they are toddlers, compared to babies who sleep well.

Lisa Meltzer, a paediatric sleep specialist says, “Sleep problems definitely start early and researchers showed that sleep problems persist over the years, their data shows this quite clearly.”

The study included more than 250 mums who were questioned about their children’s sleep patterns at the ages of 6, 12, 24 and 36 months old.

The study also investigated sleep problems as children got older. Common problems for under two’s was falling and staying to sleep where as by the age of 3, children tended to suffer from nightmares and restlessness.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. If you baby’s a troubled sleeper, we’ve got plenty of advice and ideas to help her and (and you) sleep through the night. And getting your little one into a routine early could help prevent sleepless nights in the future.
