How soon should you start trying to get your baby into a routine, and how to go about it?

    You can start a bedtime routine from day one - decide at what time you want your baby to go to bed and start putting her down at this time. Initially you might put her in her a Moses basket in a living area of the house, switching to the bedroom when she is a little older.

    Don't worry about establishing a feeding routine at first - leave it until at least eight weeks, especially if you are breastfeeding. Babies often fall into their own routines for feeding, so wait and see what happens. The most important thing early on is that baby feeds when she feels hungry.

    'Try not to obsessively compare your baby's sleep with other mums. All babies' sleep habits are so different and change so reguarly, it will only stress you out if your baby seems to be behind the others.'

    You can start helping your baby learn the difference between night and day straight away. Give him a bath, change him into his nightclothes and feed him in a dark, quiet room around the same time every night.

    Keep all feeds until the morning quiet and brief, and only change his nappy if he poos or is very wet.

    During the day, interact with him while he's awake, don't try to minimise noise around the house and, when he naps, use a room that's not too dark or quiet.

    'If you're trying something new with your baby, such as sleep-training or a different nap routine, always do it for at least a week to give it a proper chance to work.'
