The Apprentice's BabyGlow and the Kiddicare mystery

The baby sleepsuit with a built-in ‘thermometer’ got a fantastic debut on TV. So would you buy it?

Any fans of The Apprentice will have seen an innovative new baby sleepsuit, called the BabyGlow, winning the day for the Apollo team. What clinched the team’s success, was a massive order from Kiddicare, who 'signed up' for 10,000 BabyGlows.

However, when parents went to buy the BabyGlow straight after the show, they found strangely it wasn't in stock on Kiddicare's website. It turns out that it was a pretend order – just for The Apprentice TV cameras. The idea is that if this was real life, Kiddicare would have put the order in.

However, within a couple of days (and a huge amount of post-show interest) Kiddicare is now stocking BabyGlow. The baby grows are also available to buy from the BabyGlow website – www.babyglowshop.com, costing £29.95 for two.

So what is BabyGlow?

It was described on the programme as the world’s softest thermometer. It’s a baby sleepsuit that changes colour if your baby gets too hot. When your baby reaches safe temperature again, it returns to the original colour – pink or blue.

It doesn’t require batteries. Instead, the suit’s inventor, Chris Eberjer, has worked with scientists to develop heat-sensitive pigments which are then embedded in the baby grow.

While it’s a new design, heat-sensitive sleepsuits are not a new idea. We revealed that Asda introduced its own range of heat-sensitive babywear in September last year, which alerted parents if a baby was getting too hot.

You can get a 2-pack of ‘Temperature Alert’ Sleepsuits from ASDA for £6, or a 3-pack vest set for £5.

BabyGlow is considerably more expensive at £29.95 for 2 sleepsuits. Clearly the technology has moved on, and the BabyGlow suits mean it’s easier to detect if your baby is getting too hot, as the colour of the whole suit changes, whereas the ASDA suits have a temperature sensitive icon on the fabric behind your baby’s neck.

Here at MFM we can see that BabyGlow will appeal to new parents who are very worried about overheating and the risk of cot death. However, we also have the following thoughts:

1 It’s a very expensive buy at nearly £15 for each sleepsuit. If you’re putting your baby in a sleepsuit each night, you’d need at least three sleepsuits so you can have one washing, one drying and one to wear.

2 The babysuit we saw on the show was lightish pink. The colour change to white would be difficult to see in dim light – ie, when your baby is sleeping in a darkened room. Would you need to turn on the light each time you want to check the sleepsuit?

3 Most baby monitors now come with built-in room thermometers, which are clearly displayed on the parent unit or easy to see in the dark in your baby’s room. Some will alert you by beeping if the temperature gets too high.

4 Could it make some very nervous parents feel they constantly have to check the colour of their baby’s sleepsuit all through the night? Does it gnaw away at the common sense that parents have?

There’s a simple, free way to check if your baby is too hot – feel your baby’s skin temperature with your flat hand on his back or chest. If he feels hot, sweaty or clammy, he may be too hot, and you should look at removing a layer of clothing or a blanket. Check again in 15 minutes to check that he feels cooler.

Find out how many blankets your baby needs according to the room temperature.

We’d love to know what you think of the BabyGlow – would you buy it?

I remember the colour change t shirts that were in fashion years ago and stopped working after a few washes in the machine - think it was due to the heat of the wash cycle, could be a problem with these as well as cold wash isn't practical if baby has been sick or a nappy has leaked! Personally I think that this product is a terrible idea. As you said, you will have to keep turning the light on to check the colour of the suit. Surely there is a risk that it won't change colour as from what was said in the pitch, the baby would have to get very hot before a change happened - possibly already being too late. Checking the temperature of the room in the first place, using appropriate bedding and actually monitoring your child will ALWAYS be better than an expensive gimmick. I bet there is a disclaimer on the back saying it does not act as a subsititute for checking your child so what is the point. About 2 years ago
The babyglow team The babyglow team
We're happy to report that Kiddicare takes delivery of its first real order today! They couldn't do so before because Babyglow was only officially launched for sale in the UK last Friday at the Baby Show - so a week from launch to delivery to the UK's largest online baby product retailer is quite impressive! We were delighted to be featured on the Apprentice, which was filmed back in January when we were still finalising the design, but we're even more thrilled that Babyglow is now on sale to parents in the UK.

Although this sensitive issue was mentioned during the pitch in The Apprentice, we have never claimed that the Babyglow will prevent cot death, but it is another valuable indicator that a baby is getting too hot and that you need to seek medical attention. We know that the product won't suit everyone, but, as pointed out on BBC Breakfast, not everyone needs a bath thermometer - lots of people still choose to test the water with their elbow - but many thousands choose to use the bath thermometer. Choice is always good, and Babyglow is just another additional choice for parents. If you feel confident of detecting a raised temperature, that's wonderful; but if you feel anxious that you might not know how to do this, then do look at all the available options, including conventional thermometers, and learn how to use them correctly. As the world's softest thermometer, a Babyglow sleepsuit might just be a good option for you. It will be up to everyone to make their own choice.

To answer your individual points, as with any new product, the price reflects development costs, but we expect that in time we will be able to bring the cost down as we produce larger quantities. People may wish to use the Babyglow when they think that their baby may be sickening for something rather than all the time, as an aid to being able to spot when the baby’s temperature rises rapidly.

You will need some light when checking the colour of the sleepsuit for changes, so it may be a good idea to keep a small torch handy for checking occasionally during the night. However, the colour change is pretty obvious – by the time the baby’s temperature has risen a couple of degrees to 39ºC, the suit will be completely white, so you will know that you need to act and seek medical attention.

Room thermometers are good for indicating the temperature of the room, but they don’t tell you the temperature of the baby, who may still be overdressed in a sleeping bag or too many blankets. The British Standard for sleeping bags states that there has to be a WARNING “do not let your child overheat”. Babies cannot regulate their temperature well, so the sleepsuit provides an additional indicator for actual body temperature, which is important to monitor.

The Babyglow will stand up to plenty of washes at 30ºC, which with modern detergents is perfectly feasible, and it will continue to work after frequent washing.

We’re firm believers in common sense parenting, but not everyone has a wealth of family knowledge to rely on. Understandably, first time parents often worry that they won’t spot the signs of overheating which can develop quickly and may increase the risk of cot death. The Babyglow suit is just another aid to parents in detecting any signs for concern as early as possible.

And how many of these things are you meant to buy...they cost a fortune and babies grow so fast.  Choice? only if you're not very bright and can't tell if your baby is too hot.....but if you've got more money than sense and don't trust a thermometer that you can pay £25 for (and it'll last for quite a bit longer too) then go for it...i'd not look @ it twice..

Personally, the only good invention I ever saw featured on the Apprentice was that little hat called a thudguard that saves babies from a head injury when they are learning to walk and lets face it, they will fall over and whats the worst fear you have as a parent when you baby falls?  so for me www.thudguard.com does exactly what it says!
