It’s an exciting time when you decide to try – and then begin to master – breastfeeding. The bonding experience is second to none, and of course it’s recommended by the World Health Organisation as the best way to provide your baby with the essential nutrients he needs. But sometimes it can be easier said than done.
“It’s about knowing where the difficulties are and working through them,” says Sioned Hilton, lactation consultant and health visitor. “Having high expectations of yourself as a new mum and then not meeting them can lead to self-doubt and feeling low. You can feel a failure if you think you’re not getting breastfeeding right.”
