First swim for Michelle Heaton’s baby girl… are you ready for the plunge?

As Michelle tweets happy first swim with daughter Faith, we ponder the perils of the baby pool…

Ready for a dip?

Swimming with your baby just sounds idyllic, doesn’t it? All that splishing and splashing, fun and exercise, finishing up with a nice warm towel. But there’s always that niggling feeling it could quickly go wrong. Yep, you guessed it – we’re talking about ‘bottom accidents’.

It all seemed to go well for celeb Michelle Heaton, who tweeted, “Faith loved her first swim. We dunked her once slowly and no tears, so huge success.” But while it all went swimmingly (sorry!) for Michelle, there’s always that worry – what if it’s my child who brings a little something extra to the party?

Nightmare visions of swimming pools being evacuated, the pool being drained and a lot of grumbling parents waiting to get back in the pool… eek. It’s enough to make you stay at home and avoid going to the pool ever again.

A quick rally around the office revealed most have had to do the poolside dash to retrieve their in-pool-pooper. A battle-worn swimming teacher even told us they’d been thrown up on mid-swimming lesson.

But, while a little accident isn’t the end of the world, being prepared is a good idea. Not only will this save some red faces, not being suddenly whisked out the pool will make the whole experience much calmer.

If you’re thinking of heading to the pool with your baby, Anna Woodhart, recognised as one of the best baby swimming teachers in the world, has teamed up with Huggies® Little Swimmers® to offer this advice:

  1. Make sure your baby is kitted out with a proper swim nappy before getting into the water.
  2. It’s best to avoid swimming altogether if your baby has had an upset stomach in the last 24 hours.
  3. You can help them learn, too. Keep smiling and get your shoulders down under the water. You’re baby will see you’re enjoying the water and learn to relax and play.
  4. Swimming can be scary the first few times, so stay nice and close to make your baby feel safe.
  5. If you’re not taking part in a specific class, try and go during quieter times at the pool. It’ll take some of the stress away.
  6. Get a friend or partner to come with you the first few times if you can. It’ll help you get used to battling with lockers, bags, towels and a wet baby.
  7. Help your baby get used to water in the bath or shower. Showing them you like the water on your face and head will encourage them to try it.
