Gisele Bundchen wants breastfeeding to be law

Supermodel and new mum Gisele Bundchen has caused controversy after arguing that mums should be forced to breastfeed by law for six months

Gisele Bundchen has caused controversy after suggesting that women should be forced to breastfeed for six months, by international law.

Gisele, who gave birth to son Benjamin Rein seven months ago also said that breastfeeding was one of the key reasons that she quickly regained her pre baby figure.

“I think breastfeeding really helped. Some people here think they don't have to breastfeed, and I think, ‘Are you going to give chemical food to your child, when they are so little?’ There should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months,” she told Harper’s Bazaar.

Gisele also suggested she found giving birth to be a painless process, as she practised kung fu and yoga while pregnant, “It prepared me mentally and physically, It's called ‘labour’, not ‘holiday’ for a reason, and I knew that.

“You want to go into the most intense physical experience of your life unprepared? That doesn't make any sense to me. Then I was ready and I thought, ‘OK let's get to work’. I wasn't expecting someone else to get the baby out of me. I had to do it together with him.”

Although Gisele isn’t the first celebrity to talk openly about breastfeeding, she definitely has a very controversial opinion on the subject. Have a look at our step-by-step guide to breastfeeding. If you need help, and if you are bottlefeeding, make sure you check out our advice for successful bottlefeeds.

At last someone talking sense. Thank goodness for Gisels and others like them. Gives me hope that the world might not be populated entirely by people who are happy to give their children junk food from their first day.. About 2 years ago

So what about the mum's with mastitis, or on antibiotics, or who have emergency hospital stays? Breastfeed is brilliant for baby and mum but is not always in the parent's control. I have friends who were heartbroken because breastfeeding wasn't successful or possible. I've had it up to here with the brestfeeding facists, go live your own life and keep your outdated and hurtful opinions to yourselves. About 2 years ago

I took it to mean that people should not bottle feed for no reason.

Lots of people can't feed for medical reasons, but just not wanting to is a poor start to your attitude towards your baby!

Breastfeeding is extremely hard and very painful to start with, but aside from all the bonding rubbish, it's easier, cheaper, cleaner, and better for your babies health, so to not want to strikes me as more than a little strange.

We have a CHOICE. We can bottle feed or breast feed. I tried to feed my daughter but it didn't work out. Was it me? Was it her? I don't know. All I know is that I changed to bottle feeding and she was happy and content. A law which stated I had to feed for 6 months would have left my daughter and I both unwell and miserable. I will try again if I have another baby, but I shan't beat myself up if it doesn't work again. A happy, loved, full baby is the most important thing.

Being a new mum is hard enough as it is without unhelpful comments such as this. We don't need more pressure, we need support to make the right decision for us and our babies, be that bottle or breast.
