The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, struggled to hold back the tears in a TV interview about the death of his premature baby daughter, Jennifer.

Gordon Brown welled up as he talked on Piers Morgan's Life Stories about the moment he and wife, Sarah, realised their newborn baby would not survive. Jennifer was born prematurely in 2002 and died following a brain haemorrhage when she was 10 days old.

"It was very emotional. He did not break down in tears but his eyes clearly welled up," said a friend. Sarah Brown wept as she watched her husband's interview from the audience.

The PM, who is dad to sons John, 7, and Fraser, 3, also spoke of his heartbreak that Fraser may have a poor life expectancy because he suffers from cystic fibrosis. "We sometimes ask, 'Why us?' but we try not to be bitter," he said when Piers quizzed him on whether he felt angry about his son's illness.

The two-and-a-half hour interview will be screened on ITV on Sunday.
