“Yay!! Kai slept all night in his own bed, without sneaking into me! Think his big boy bedroom is going to work #fingerscrossed,” tweeted Coleen, 27, wife of England and Manchester United footballer Wayne Rooney.

Sounds like Coleen's all too familiar with the sleep-depriving pattern so many of us face: the middle-of-the-night patter of small-person feet as your child wakes, gets out of their bed and comes into yours.

“A lot of children suffer from this problem between the ages of three and four," says children’s sleep consultant Melissa Bielecki.

“Most little ones do wake up and feel anxious at a certain stage," she adds. "and then when the anxiety passes, the habit stays. Never shout, but do try to create a different habit, and be consistent every night.”
