The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting their first child St James's Palace confirmed this afternoon.

The expectant mother has been taken to King Edward VII Hospital in central London with very acute morning sickness (hyperemesis) where she is expected to stay for several days as the pregnancy is said to be in its very early stages.

St James's Palace has made the official announcement and members of the royal family are said to be delighted, reports BBC News.

Rumours had been circulating for months about Kate Middleton's hint of a tummy.

Prime Minister David Cameron took to Twitter to congratulate the royal couple. "I'm delighted by the news that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting a baby. They will make wonderful parents," he tweeted.

The duchess was last seen in public on Friday when she visited her old school St Andrew's School in Pangbourne in Berkshire.

The royal baby will be born third in line and in direct succession to the throne.
