Liverpool has dedicated yesterday’s 2-1 win at Chelsea to their teammate, back-up goalkeeper Brad Jones. Brad’s 5-year-old son Lucas died over the weekend, after an 18-month battle with leukaemia.

"I'd like to dedicate the win to Brad Jones who had a difficult week losing his son," said Liverpool footballer Charlie Adam.

"That one was for you big man and we are all thinking about you," Charlie said.

"That's when football becomes irrelevant really when a 5-year-old kid dies," commented Liverpool’s manager, Kenny Dalglish.

Liverpool’s players and manager wore black armbands when playing Chelsea yesterday at Stamford Bridge, as did Brad’s former Middlesbrough teammates, for their Championship game against Blackpool on Saturday.

Respects were also paid in Brad’s home nation, Australia. There was a minute's silence before a Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory match, with teams also donning black armbands.

Footballers from rival clubs have also been tweeting messages of condolence to Brad, proving just how supportive the football community can be when tragic events happen.

"Very sad news. Puts everything into perspective," tweeted Joey Barton, of QPR.

"All my prayers go to you and your family in this really hard time. Can't find anything harder than that," tweeted Everton’s Louis Saha.
