EastEnders is set to screen not-so-festive scenes just after Christmas when a new mum loses her baby to cot death – and then swaps her dead child with another newborn.

We can reveal the shocking scenes involve Ronnie Mitchell, who after discovering that her newborn baby has passed away in her cot, she runs to Albert Square’s resident pub, The Queen Vic, for help. However, when she hears other new mum, Kat Slater’s baby crying upstairs, she switches her deceased baby with Kat’s.

“When Ronnie loses the one thing she’s always wanted, she acts on impulse in a moment of sheer desperation,” executive producer Bryan Kirkwood told the Mirror.

The sad scenes are played by actresses Jessie Wallace and Samantha Womack, who were determined to make sure the plot was filmed with sensitivity. It will be aired on New Years Eve. “We are very grateful for their accurate depiction of the devastating effects the sudden death of an infant can have on a family,” Joyce Epstein from the cot death charity, FISD, said.

To find out more about reducing the risk of cot death, take a look at MFM’s guide to safe sleeping.

i think its sick they are playing such a horrible story line!
Also, Kat would know it wasnt her own baby! Mothers know their own! even if they are new born! x

While it may make the public more aware of CDS, I hardly think it is appropriate to show on television at a family time of the year, It will bring back very sad memories and times for some less fortunate, who loved and lost their cherished Baby! About 2 years ago

omg so whats going on exactly? who loses the baby to CDS? i haven't heard of this storyline but if its the christmas episode i wud be way to upset to watch it as im due christmas day and tht would scare me to the point of not sleeping. About 2 years ago

Just once it would be nice for a soap to do a baby storyline without any drama involved! I won't be watching the Christmas episodes again this year, it all gets too far fetched and far too emotional for me! About 2 years ago

Why do they have to have such depressing story lines every Christmas?  I accept a soap is a good show to raise awareness on these topics, but agree Christmas is not the time to do it as it's such a sensitive subject.  I just hope they do it in a tasteful way. About 2 years ago
