Aquanatal classes are a great form of exercise for both pregnant and postnatal women

Aquanatal classes are water-based exercise classes especially designed for pregnant women in their second and third trimesters. They aim to help you keep gently fit without damaging any joints or ligaments. Some classes are also held for postnatal women who want to regain their fitness.

Where are they held?

In public and private swimming pools.

What to expect from aquanatal classes

An exercise class in water to music especially designed for pregnant and postnatal women. Floats may be used for some of the exercises. You do not need to be able to swim. Men are not encouraged to attend.

It is not advisable to attend in your first trimester unless you are already accustomed to exercise. Cost is usually per class, but can also be per course. Expect to pay between £4 and £10 a class. Most people attend once or twice a week for as many weeks as they enjoy it!

Why choose aquanatal classes?

If you want a fun, relaxing way to exercise with other women. And if the opportunity to be weightless for an hour appeals (if feeling weightless doesn't appeal right now, it will by the end of your pregnancy!).

But don’t choose if

You have any of the following conditions. PIH (Pregnancy Induced Hypertension), pre-eclampsia, cardiac disease, IUGR (Intra Uterine Growth Retardation), a history of three or more miscarriages, a history of premature labour, or unexplained vaginal bleeding.

Check with your doctor or midwife if you have placenta praevia (a low-lying placenta) before you take part.

These classes are also not for you if you hate water or exercise!

It would be nice if there were aquanatal classes available in my area for mums-to-be who actually work for a living...my local pool offers one aquanatal class at 12.30 on tuesday. Completely useless! About 1 years ago

You can attend any ante natal classes including aquanatal at any time, your employer have to allow you to attend any antenatal class, therefore those ladies whe work should be allowed time off to attend during the day. About 1 years ago
