A family picnic makes for a perfect summer day out

Brownsea Island, Dorset This is the famous birthplace of Scouting, and children will love the Smuggler's Trail and there are plenty of picnic spots. Tel: 01202 707744

Sheffield Park Garden, East Sussex Designed by master landscape gardener, Capability Brown, these gardens are perfect for a game of hide-and-seek. Tel: 01825 790231

Avebury Stone Circle, Wiltshire Voted one of the top five most spiritual places in the country, this is a lovely zen zone for a family picnic. Tel: 01672 539250

Richmond Park, Greater London You're sure to find a quiet spot among the ancient trees of London's largest Royal Park; afterwards, visit the playground at Petersham Gate.

Kelmscott, Gloucestershire A picnic on the banks of the Thames near the ancient village of Kelmscott is great on a hot day, because it's also quite easy to take a little dip in the gentle waters here.

Grantchester, Cambridgeshire This is where the river Cam winds through woodlands and open meadows, so there are lots of lovely spots for lunch. Tel: 01223 359750

Hazelborough Wood, Northamptonshire These are tranquil ancient woodlands where deer and even badgers live. So roll out your blanket and enjoy a picnic while you watch and wait.

Padley Gorge, Derbyshire Nestled in the Derwent Valley, there are mighty oaks and a babbling stream lined with birch, alder and holly - a truly magical setting. Tel: 01433 637904

St Herbert's Island, Lake District Hire a boat and sail to St Herbert's Island, which has four acres of woodland that offer perfect spots for your picnic. Tel: 01768 772263

Rhossili Bay, South Wales Stroll along the three-mile shore or take in the breathtaking panoramic views while picnicking or kite flying on the hills.

If you're still stuck for ideas for family fun over the summer, what about farm visits, action days and much, much more...
