my lo was 9lb 10.6oz when she was born and ate like a horse she started on 5oz bottles and soon crept up 2 9. so she had to have hungry baby milk from about 6 weeks... which she soon crept up to 9 oz bottles of that.. we have been reffered to the hospital so many times about her weight coz the HV thinks she is overweight.. she is in proportion her height, weight and head circ.. the HV problem is that she has gone off of the centile chart.. how relevant are these?
her dad is nearly 7 ft tall and im 5ft6 so i dont think she was ever going to be small... she is 10 months now and prob bout 27lbs.. she has just started to crawl so maybe she will start to burn off some weight

but my concern is that now she is moving she will beusing more energy and want more to eat.. she dosnt eat crap so i dont see the harm.. The HV makes me feel really guilty about feeding my baby which i shudnt feel .
i give her 3 meals a day she dosnt snack and everything she easts is home made and majority fruit and veg but she still puts on weight.. i dont think im doing anything wrong there? its not like she stuffs her facewith chocolate and biscuits all day!!
its not nice going HV and them saying she is fat she once told me she is like a sheep stuck on its back thats y she cant roll over coz she is so fat.. but there hardly any fat on her she is just a solid lump.. she aint flabby...
anyone help put my mind at rest..

    Hi ya,

My son (still sounds weird saying that lol) was 9lb 5oz at birth and has never lost any weight just kept putting on! He will be 1yr old next week and although he hasnt been weighed for 6 weeks he probably weighs 27lbs, I read that babies usually trebble their birth weight in the first year. I wouldnt worry too much, its so difficult to know how much to feed your lo and HV dont make it any easier cos if your lo was underweight she'd probabaly be conceraned about that too!

Joshua doesnt have much milk now probably about 12oz and he has 3 meals a day with 2 organic rice cakes at 10am and an organic snack at 3pm and the reason I give him 2 small snacks is so his blood sugar level stays stabalized so he's not starving at his meal times. He's crawling and crusing the furniture so they deffo burn off some calories and use a lot of energy!

Try not to worry, easier said than done, Vicky and Joshua xxx

Well I think your HV is downright rude - anybody talk to me like that about my baby I'd walk out!!
I've got the opposite problem - my baby is not a big eater & is smaller than average (4 months - 11lb 12oz).
If your baby is happy which she sounds I don't think there is a problem - plus you and your husband are tall so there's something in the genes!
Personally I think too much pressure is laid on these centile charts and what your baby "should" be. I mean how often are these charts updated and what are they actually based on? Because of these I'm always worrying that my lo is not growing properly.
Judging by the piccie of you lo you have a beautiful healthy baby!

By the way - sounds like you bottle feed. So do I - not being funny but I've always thought my HV has treated me "differently" to how she treats the mothers who breast feed. Is your HV like that....?

If the hospital is not worried about her weight then you have no need to worry! She looks like a lovely baby in her photo. You can request to change your health visitor too i think, which i would if i was you. My baby is similar but he's managed to stay just on the scale (he's hovering around the 99th centile) and my health visitor is lovelly and very pleased with his development. At 5months my baby is 22lb, which is above average too but he too is quite in proporton and has a very big appetite too, he's been weaning from 17wks on hv's advice. He was born at 8lb 4 which is not too big but also never lost weight, only gained and i too began breastfeeding, but litrally didnt move for up to 5hrs at a time as he was starving! he was supplimented by the hospital when he was born as he cried constantly for food and after a week he went onto bottle with me expressing aswell for 6wks, he was like a new baby when he had his first bottle! I found after i stopped expressing his weight shot up the most. Your baby will eat as much as she needs to and thats all there is to it, you cant help it! and you are right, as she begins moving she'll lose some of the weight, but even if she doesnt, babies are like us, they come in all shapes and sizes. xxx

hi there my eldest daughter was 7lb 1oz when born and by the time she was 10 weeks she was in 6-9 months clothes. My hv never said she was worried about how big she had got. She was off the centile chart but didnt have the lenght to carry her weight. It wasnt untill i looked at photos taken that i realised how big and ballooned she was, and that made me cry.

If the hv had mentioned her weight, and i wish she had, i would of listened and done something. dare i say it she was a fat baby, but always happy. shes now 2years old and yes shes still big but in the right clothing for her age for the first time ever.

If that is a picture of your daughter then she looks really healthy, happy and gorgeous. I wouldnt be worried at all. If shes long as well then there you go. Like you said she is eating the right things and when they get crawling and walking they tend to loose some, and dont eat more to make up for being more active.
Stick with what you are doing, your hv should see she is in proportion and shut up moaning!

    Steph.

hi, I completely sympathise with you, my first baby (whos 12 now !!!) was 9lb 10oz my 2nd was 10lb 12oz my 3rd was tiny at 8lb 5oz and Isaac was 9lb 6oz, he is 1 now and is 2 stone but he is tall for his age. My eldest 2 are not huge for their ages but they are a lot taller than the other children their age. People think they can comment all they like but I think its really rude, My mil is always calling Isaac little fatty and it really annoys me, he is not fat just big for his age, it doesnt help that my sil had a baby in January and he was only 5 lb 6oz so mil constantly tells me how much fatter Isaac is than him. grrrrr she would soon take offence if i told her sil baby was a scrawny litte runt.

Dont worry - your baby is healthy and trhiving. My 2 girls were both quite small and now at age 8 and almost five they are wee smurfs compared to their friends. My son, however, is huge!! He was 8lb 15 when born 10 days early but was 54cm. He has continued steadily along the 97th centile for weight length and head circ. and he is just over 6 months and already 23lbs!!!! He is in 6-9 months clothes but I have already started buying 9-12 stuff as he is struggling to get in to most of the 6-9 stuff!! He has to wear 12-24 mnths socks as his feet are so big and he has a size 3 feet!!!!!! (Got the lady at clarks to measure him when I had the girls in) - not that he wears or needs shoes just yet. I had to buy him 1-3 yrs sunhats for our hols as none of the baby ones from mothercare would go on his head. (God I make him sound like a monster!!). Anyway, he was on solids from 3 months too on advice of HV - however, when I hear what some other babies are consuming I dont worry as he only has 24oz milk in a day plus approx equivalent to to small baby jars or fuit/veg. He is perfect when naked (that is he isnt covered in rolls of fat) he is perfectly in proportion and I love him they way he is. It is hurtful sometimes when people comment on the size of him but I know that he isnt greedy or overfed and is just a big boy. Hopefully he will stay like that and be able to take care of himself and his sisters when he is older. I'm sure your lo is perfectly fine, try not to worry to much about conforming to 'norms' in terms of weight etc. Afterall. all babies develop at different rates, not just relating to physical movement development, intellectual development etc but also in terms of their weight etc. If the profs. arent worried then dont you worry. Take care.

Upsy-Daisy your little girl is absolutely adorable.

My eldest was 6lb 13 at birth and just didn't put on weight well at all so I had the opposite problem of being told to give her formula when all I wanted to do was breastfeed...I told them to shove it! We know our babies best and let's face it if a baby eats too much they are sick. If they dont eat enough they cry! Violet is a titch like her sister and is 6 months in 3 days, she has 3 big meals a day but will only drink around 15 oz of milk a day if I am lucky and she is just 15lbs! She is still in some of her 0-3 month sleepsuits!!! She is a very happy content baby and if she was starving then she wouldn't be so content.

I think your hv is perfectly horrible and you deserve far better.

    Enjoy your gorgeous daughter.

Hi there. I've just read all of your posts and I can totally relate to everything you're saying. Ethan was 7lb12oz when he was born so not particularly large, and I breastfed him for the first 5.5months but he very quickly became a "big boy". I was forever asking my HV and Doc if I could overfeed him if I was breastfeeding and they always said no. I am always getting people commenting on his size when i'm asked how old he is - they are always surprised. I was advised by one of my HV's to wean him early (at 5 months) but on another visit a different HV told me not to feed him as much as I was (he quickly progressed to 3 meals a day but he only eats what I would call good food - organic fruit, veg and meat). I found it very confusing - but now I've decided that I'm going to let him tell me how much he wants to eat! I've been trying to cut down his milk (he currently has 2 big feeds - morning and bedtime, and a 3 ounce feed at 10.30 and about 5 ounces at 3pm) but he doesnt want to give any of it up yet!! He's happy so I'm just going to relax about it. Brooke looks gorgeous so I wouldnt worry either

I agree with beaniesmum, my son was 9 and a half pound born and was on hungry baby milk by 4 weeks, he was a cute slightly chubby tall toddler, he's now 10 and very nearly 5' bean pole, still eats like a horse but just has a high metabalism, I am 5'8" and his dad is 6'3" so like you never likely to be iccle. You will know yourself if your baby is too big or being greedy, I say gauge it yourself.

Hi upsy daisy. My boys were quite big, 9lb 13 and 9lb 3 (and he was a week early) and both were off the centile chart for their length (I'm 5'8 and dad is 6'4)
My eldest is 6 and eats like a horse and has settled aroung 75th centile with not a scrap of fat on him. My other is 14 months and around 50th centile. A lot of my mates have had big babies (10lb3 and 10lb7) and they have grown into average size children. When I was on my university placement with HV's last year they said they are soon to be scrapping centile charts (like BMI's) cos they are just too unreliable) Also you are well within your rights to ask for another HV but they may take you more seriously if you put it in writing, don't be fobbed off.

We are doing a hard enough job as it is without so called professionals questioning our parenting skills and make us feel inadequate and guilty (as u can tell it makes me angry!)
I reckon in a few more years they will be telling mums not to worry about weight until they start school, i know there are some dozy mothers who let their children become obese by letting em eat crap all day but you sound like a great mum so don't worry. And tell your HV to bog off!!

You shouldn't be treated like that, I would file a complaint if I were you and demand a different health visitor. Kian is an average weight for his age, but my friend's little girl is 7 and a half months and she is 27lb, but is in proportion with her height and head circumference and she is beautiful, she just looks about 12 months! Her hv keeps referring her to hospital but there is nothing wrong! Her dad is 6ft4 and mum 5ft7 so maybe she is just tall? I wouldn't worry about it, at the end of the day, you know best, you're her mum. Tell that hv to shove it and keep your little girl happy because shes stunning!
