Hi, im a new dad so obviously new to this forum and may I say what a great place this looks.

Anyway...babys now 2 weeks old and is being bottle fed.
Where as before he was poo'ing maybe 3 times a day it has now been twice in only 3 days but what happened last night scared me a bit...I was changing him before I went to bed and he started to poo and as it was coming out I could see it was 'really hard' and the poor lad was screaming so I knew he was in pain as hes usually a very quiet baby.

My mother says try warm boiled water which I have done but I wanted to know if she knows what shes talking about and would any of you recommend changing the milk I am using and what to?

Any other tips would be grateful
    Thanks

Nice to see a dad on here for a change!
Warm water often helps them, don't know the science behind it but it usually does! Someone on here also suggested putting a tiny bit of brown sugar in the water but to be honest, I'd try the cooled boiled water on it's own first.
As for changing his milk, if he's been pooing normally before this little episode and was on the same milk then it's probably not the milk that is causing it. If he's gaining weight and not being too sick after feeds then I would just leave him on the milk he's on already. Changing their milk can cause more problems!
If you don't see any improvement after the water, perhaps give your health visitor a call and see what she suggests.

I had this with my lo, and the water did work. I wondered if it was the formula, and i changed it but she went completely the other way! So I changed back again and gave her water about 4 times a day. She got better after a few days. She still does get constipated from time to time (but now thats cos she is teething!)

Dont worry it should get better, and water does really help!

When he is straining hold his legs to his tummy to help whilst hes doing a poo. It does work!

    Hope this helps, good luck

    Hi
Some cool boiled water usually does the trick for Ruby and doing some cycling, i lie her on her back and move her legs as if she's riding a bike. I also gently massage her tummy.

    Good Luck

Thanks to all whos replied and on the other thread as well - where I messed up lol

Its put my mind at rest that this is quite a common thing and its not being caused from the milk. Will try the water at regular intervals (even tho he pulls some funny faces when I try to give him it) and the cycling...interesting!

Once again thanks, and its nice to know that I can come back to this place with any other problems...keep up the good work!

It's not unusual for a new baby to poo every few days. My health visitor said some new babies, especially those who are breast fed, only go once per week. My son was an every three or four days kind of guy

hi, my lo hated taking water so if you are finding it difficult to get down try giving it before feed when he is at his hungriest.

I wouldn't give citrus juice as citrus fruit are not recommended until six months of age as they can cause a food intolerance reaction. Probably something to do with being too acidic for such a young digestive system. Try to perserve with the water, Morgana is prone to these 'not going for a few days' episodes and she now takes water after initially spewing it all over the shop. You can also try sitting him in a warm bath up to his waist to stimulate his bowels.
