Hi, I'm new here but wondered if anyone could help.
My baby is 7 weeks old and is breastfed. He is gaining weight well, went from 8 pounds 13 to 10 pounds 10 in the last 3 weeks (last weighed on Friday). For the last 5 days he has only been pooing once every 48 hours. is this normal? When he does go it is not hard, it is the same consistency as usual. He is not vomiting, is passing wind and is feeding 3 hourly during the day and 4 hourly at night, although not with his usual enthusiasm. On the second day he does seem to be in some discomfort. Today he seems more sleepy than usual but I don't know if this is related or whether he is just tired. Anyone got any advice? Should I be concerned? He is seeing his health visitor on Friday, do I need to do anything before then?

I cant give you any advice as I'm currently ttc #1 but just want to say Hi and Welcome to PP!
Have you spoken to your HV about this before? As it might be worth just giving them a call.
Sorry I cant help any further but i'm sure one of the girls will be along shortly

Thanks for replying. Nice to feel welcome.
It's a new thing so I haven't spoken to the HV yet but I might just give her a ring in the morning to be on the safe side. I've already got a toddler so you'd think I'd know what I was doing, but this breastfeeding thing and all that goes with it is new territory to me.
Good luck with ttc. I'll watch out for some good news.

I remember having a similar discussion amongst my mums group and the range of um.. pooing regularity was really diverse! One of the babies was pooing once a week for a few weeks. My daughter was more on the 5 times a day road... I used to worry that she went too often, but I just think that they're all different
Try not to worry - hopefully the HV will put you at ease.

Will let you know how I get on Sarah. My name's Jackie. I have two little boys keeping me on my toes. One is two and 9 months and the other 7 weeks old.
Thanks gdoll, I'm sure you're right. Wouldn't be interesting if they were all the same.

Welcome to pp. I'm Lucy and mummy to 2 boys age 9&6 and a little girl age 2
I would say its perfectly normal for your little one to only poo every other day, but if you think he is in a little discomfort when he goes it may be causing him pain. If he was bottle fed I would advise you to put a squirt of orange juice from a whole orange into his bottle of water, but as you are breastfeeding you could perhaps drink some yourself to see if it helps him poo a little easier. I dont know much about breastfeeding, but could your diet be anything to do with it? Just a thought!
Hope its some help

Hi im jenni mum to isabelle 14 months!
I had the same prob with isabelle when i was bfeeding,my HV told me to put a bit of apple juice(good quality not from concentrate)into a bottle of cooled boiled water!being a bfeed baby she wouldnt take it though!! she used to go 4-5 days without pooing sometimes and would be uncomfortable inbetween.I used to give her tummy na dback a little massage!dunno if it worked but seemed to ease the discomfort.
Anyway welcome to pp on this lovely subject!!! xx

good point about the baby massage... supposed to be really good to get things going. We had a few.. um accidents when we did it with our group (from the babies, not the mums of course!!)

Hi Jackie. Welome to PP, always good to have another member to chat to.
I have a five month old girl and she used to only poo every 48 hours - nothing for 24 hours and then she'd let rip and fill her nappy to bursting point two or three times. There is unlikely to be anything wrong if the poo is the same colour and consistency as usual, you can tell a lot by looking at poo, really you can... a little discomfort is not anything to really be worried about if it does seem to be linked to the bowel movements, but ask a HV just in case. Try the baby massage, have a look on websites for info, I got some stuff from Pampers, maybe they have something on their site.
By the way, I say 'used' to poo every other day, she picked up a touch of a virus that her brother had (knocked him for six but she was only mildly effected - yay breastfeeding!!) and that has altered her pattern. N. xx
