Thought I'd post on Baby because it can be a bit quiet on Bottlefeeding sometimes.

So, i have been making up four bottles at a time, mixing the formula with the water so the powder dissolves really well, then storing in the fridge and heating when needed. He takes 5-6 feeds a day so it's not like they're siting in the fridge for a long time. However, after reading a thread on bottlefeeding, the consensus was the best way to do it was adding the cool boiled water to the bottles, keeping at room temperature, adding the formula when the feed was due then heating. So, thinking this was probably best, i gave it a whirl over the last two days, and Evan has been really unsettled, not feeding well, and a little bit constipated. Could this be because the formula isn't mixing as well if the water isn't hot when you add it? Maybe its a coincidence, but he just really seemed affected by the change in doing his bottles.

    Any advice greatfully received.

It depends what formula you're using. If it's regular stage 1 formula then it should mix fine with cooled boiled water. If it's comfort/easy digest or a special formula then it may be better mixed with hot water. It should say on the tin how long the water ought to be cooled for before mixing it.
I've always favoured the option of leaving cooled boiled water in bottles at room temp and then adding powder when required as I couldn't deal with 2 screaming babies while the bottles heated but that's just my preference!!

    Hi,

We do what you used to do - mix whilst the water was hot, then store in the fridge. I have no idea if this is the right or wrong way to do things but our justification for doing it this way rather than adding the powder when needed to cooled water was that a) the powder mixed in better and b) the heat of the water helps to sterilise the powder. We make 3 bottles up at a time so the oldest a bottle will be when we give it to Finn is 6 hours - stored in the fridge. I also give Finn the bottle without warming it - he prefers it that way!

I don't really know if there is a right or wrong way to do it - obviously the offical line is to make each one up fresh but thats impossiable! If your LO has been unsettled since you changed I'd be inclined to change back. It doesn't appear to be doing my LO any harm!

    Hi
I make the day bottles up with cooled boiled water then leave them at room temperature and add the powder when needed. I don't reheat. My DD seems much happier with her feeds done this way. To start with I used to store in fridge and warm it up but I soon realized that she doesn't like warm milk!!

I suppose if your son is happy with the way you usually do it then stick with what's best for you

I also make up and store in fridge. But i do folllow rule of allowing water to cool for 30 mins as it says this kills any bacteria. I make 2 bottles in morning for his evening feed and at about 7 i make 4 bottles. When Luen wants his bottles i warm them up forr him and he actually likes them really hot!!
This has worked for me and know from working in nurseries etc we used to have to ask parents to bring their bottles ready made as we not allowed to make them and for hygiene reasons they were stored in fridge. Plus years ago the guidance was that make up and store in fridge.
Everybody has own way of doing things and like others have said if it works for you and your baby fine i would stick with it that what i think to myself!! xx
