Hi, i'm g/c from DIM and wondering if any of you mummies could give me some advice.

I am looking to get a new car on one of the scrappage deals as mine is falling apart but am not sure what one to go for! I want to get a small 5 door one that is safe but has a decent boot size for a buggy and not too expensive. So far we have thought of Renault Clio, Citreon C3, Peugeot 207 & Kia Ceed. Am trying to compare safety/boot size and tax&insurance costs at the moment and then will hopefully test drive the ones that tick most boxes. If any of you have one of these cars it would be great to hear about what you think of it or any others that you recommend. I'm going round in circles at the moment!

    Thank you :\)

    Hey there minieggs....

I may be totally wrong on this... but i thought that by doing the scrappage scheme thing, it was only certain cars. I may be wrong in this and it may be different in different areas.

Hope someone else can give u more info on this...

I had the old style Clio in the 3 door and I've now got the C3. Personally I love the C3 and it's great with a baby. The boot is pretty big, I have fitted my Quinny Buzz in the boot, though when I used the Dreami pram bit I did often stick that on the back seat for ease.

Now I mainly store pushchairs in the boot (it does easily fit 2) and it's still all good. I like that fact that it's a fairly upright space as I can have the pushchair on one side and shopping on the other. It's also very good for fitting in most car seats, and turning off the airbag in the front is very easy (but not too easy that it can be done in errror). Driving wise I like it as it's more spacious than my old clio was and far more comfortable to drive over longer distances.

One bonus I would say of the Citroen's over the clio (or even the Modus which is more like the C3) is that servicing is only every 2 years or 20,000 miles with the C3, whereas with the Renault's it's 1 year or every 12,000 miles, and I think this is also true of some other makes such as Vauxhall and Ford.

Be careful with your deals when you do look as some manufacturers have raised their MRRP prices by the amount of the scrappage allowance so you aren't getting such a good deal. Haggle all you can!!!!!

In response to Cupcakes point. You can use the scrappage allowance on any new car as far as I'm aware. Watch out for special deals as I know Citroen were doing enhanced discounts (3k) on certain models when I checked last week for some friends that were thinking of doing the same thing.

Cupcake- They are offering scrappage deals on those cars x

Kristinmc- Wow what great info, i do like the look of the C3 and that's great that you say the boot is roomy! I didn't mention that i'd like isofix points in my post but i think they are in the C3 arn't they?

Yep i will def be haggling whatever i go for, every penny counts with a baby on the way doesn't it! x

Hey hun may i suggest one that you havent mentioned. I havent personally got the car would of loved to but couldnt afford it so had to buy a cheap car run around but a Honda Jazz. They surprisingly have enormous boots and the back seats fold down untold amounts of under storage and isofix points on both sides of the back seats. Def worth going to have a look at one if you its within your budget. Also my OH is a mecanic and Honda are by far the best car to buy as they are japenese and are very reliable and easy to fix if they ever break xx

We have just bought a Honda Civic and had a good look at the Jazz while in the showroom and its amazing. They are so reliable being Honda and have brill fuel economy and lower insurance groups if i remember right. We also looked at Renault (had an megane before) and they werent doing very good deals at all and Honda did us an ex demo for 5k less then the new price which had loads of extras on better alloys etc.

    Hiya,

We've got the diesel Civic, which is just brilliant but is quite big though I haven't had a problem with it's size.

My folks have a Jazz, which is also fantastic. No competition to the power of the civic but for a small run-a-round it's great. The boot fits in my M&P's Herbie buggy and a weekly shop if you let the parcel shelf roll back and are a bit creative with your packing. The seats fold back really easily in the back and the ride is good.

I think you've just got to make a list and get some test drives done - make sure you take your pram with you!!

    Have fun!

Honda jazz does seem to be pretty good. Some friends have got one and do seem to be able to cram them in.

The C3 does have isofix points on the back seat which I found a godsend for the first 9 months.

I've got a friend with a Honda Jazz and 3 kids and she absolutely loves it. They're quite expensive compared with similar size cars of other makes, but they come out right at the top in all the consumer satisfaction surveys etc.
I've got a 5 door new style Vauxhall Astra and I love it - it's small enough to park easily and yet nippy (1.6l petrol is what I've got) and plenty of boot space.

D'oh, meant to say also, the newer style Astra (mine is 55 reg) is the top star rating for safety and much cheaper than the Honda Jazz, but if budget is no object the Jazz does get great reviews.

    Thanks for the opinions ladies,

It's helpful to hear that you don't recommend the 207 Lara x

I think the 307 is out of our price range vintage rose though i will check x

I will check out the new Astra too emsyj, not familiar with that one. Can't believe how many cars there are out there!

The Jazz seems to be a winner with most, we are going to test drive one this week. I like that it's got 5 stars from NCAP and it sounds very roomy- especially for your holiday items MrsAmanda- wow!
Hopefully if we like it we can get a good deal. Think we may test drive the Clio and C3 too.

I think any new model car should have Isofix points now, wasn't it made compulsory in 06 production?

Yep that's very helpful Naz, thanks. Am getting excited about the Jazz now, would be great to have my car sorted before xmas! also as i don't have a pram yet it's great to hear that all these different brands fit!

I'm not sure FlirtyFilly- Maybe it's just that some don't advertise they have the points, not sure why x

It's not compulsory yet from what I know, my Mum's Ford Fusion (56 reg) doesn't have any isofix and MIL's 07 Jag didn't have any either.

honda seem very good at putting isofix in dh has a 02 plate civic and it has isofix, you can buy brand new cars without ixofix, i was looking at the 107 and the basic model doesn't have it so it is worth checking

Every newly designed car had to have isofix from 06, but cars designed/released before that don't have to, although a lot do.
Have you thought about a 5 door Toyota Yaris as well? My sister has one and she loves it, you can move the back seat forward and backward to give you either more legroom or a bigger boot depending on what you need, and Toyotas are normally very reliable.
