    Hi

Can babies go straight into a cot? or is it worthwhile to buy and moses basket or crib- how long do they last in a crib/moses baskets?

    Thanks fran

I'd say it massively depends on the baby. Some like space and some like to be snuggled and cosy.

My LO was in her moses basket til 8 weeks for all sleeps, then for daytime naps to 12 weeks ish, she went in her crib and night at 8 weeks and is still in that at 14 weeks and will be until 6 months if she stops growing so quickly that is.

Saying that my best friends LO was in her mose's basket until she was 6 months because she liked to be snuggled up.

babies can go straight into a cot but for most people who want baby in their room for a time a cot takes up too much roo????m and it can be a bit too roomy for a tiny baby, where as a crib or moses are slightly more snug and some babies like this as they feel less out in the open and more secure. i had a moses with ds, he was quite a small baby (6lb 12) and it lasted him until he was 4 months when he started rolling over (only reason he came out of it was cos he was rolling, as this meant it wasn't too safe.) we din't have a cribn, but i wld liek when next time as he cld have stayed in that until he was sitting, but then that was 5/5.5months so not much longer anyway., if we do get a crib next time we'll keep that in our room and have the moses downstairs. xx

It does all depend on babe - and what suits you!

We went for a crib for overnight, and used our pram shell during the day as I didn't feel a moses basket would last long enough for what was likely to be a big, and quick growing baby given family history.

We used the crib for 5 weeks before transferring to cotbed - but that was purely because I wanted to move him to his own room so DH could get some sleep once he was back at work. The pram we used downstairs for about 3-4 months until he preferred the cot or going to sleep on me!

If we'd wanted him in our room for longer then I think the crib would have probably lasted for at least 4 months.

When I had my first lo I didnt have a moses basket or a crib, just a cot so I tried putting him straight into that and he hated,I think it was too much space,so he slept in his pram or in my bed until he was bigger but with this lo I have a crib and he has slept in it since day one and is only now getting a bit big for it at nearly six months and he isn't a small baby.
As everyone else said,it depends on the baby.x

Personally I found the moeses basket a waste of money as both of mine refused to go into it after about 2 weeks and started sleeping in a crib over night and in the bouncy chair during the day. I am sure Ashton was in the crib until about 5 months then moved into the cot still in our bedroom. Luckly then we had a huge room, we have since moved house and Leighton is still in the crib in our room but once he out grows it he will have to move into his own room in the cot as we can't fit it in our room.

I would look at how much space you have and if you want baby in with you at night and also how much you have to spend before buying anything. Or try the like of freecycle as we got our crib from there, its a mama and papas one and was brand new, even the materess was still in its wrapper! xxx
