hi everyone! i have a brand new baby girl and i want to ask your opinion with nappies! we are currently using huggies size 1 and despite a couple of leaks-poo wise, we are quite happy using them! the problem is i've got the environment playing on my mind! don't get me wrong i'm not sat here typing this whilst hugging a tree (!) but we as a family like to do our bit-recycling what we can etc. to be honest i dont want to use reusables even though i know they are better for the environment and are cheaper in the long run-just feel its a lot of hassel and dont really fancy the extra washing! so have just started looking at biodegradable options. i have only just scratched the surface on researching it, but can see you can buy biodegradable nappies, wipes and nappies sacks. what i want to know is can anyone share their experiences/recomendations for any brands they have used?!! obviously the more biodegradable they are the better and the cost is also a big factor-have noticed they do seem to be more expensive-not sure if this is the case with all though!
sorry for the long post but would really value anyones opinions/input on the topic!
    thanks a lot!

LOL@ typing hugging a tree! think that might be quite hard to do!

Can't offer advice re biodegradeable but can say I elected disposables over reusables 1 for convenience but 2 i saw research that showed all the washing, drying etc could amount to the same amount of environmental damage etc.

Hopefully someone will be able to help more re biodegradable,

Congratulations on your baby girl x

we tried the nature ones- sainsburys sell them and tbh didnt find them very absorbant- the outside of them always felt very damp and they were more expensive aswell, no experience with any others tho, we stick to huggies. xxx

I use reuseables during the day, which I know you're not keen on, and Nature nappies during the night and when we are out. We've never had a problem with the feeling damp but my girls are still at the lower end of the weight range for the size they are in IYKWIM. I also buy the Nature nappy sacks. They are slightly more expensive than degradeable but since I don't use them all the time, I don't mind paying a bit more for them.

One of the main reasons I decided to use reuseables was to save money (double to buy!) and I have to say, washing them is no hassle. I did endless research and got totally bamboozled by the choice so in the end I just bought good old fashioned Terry squares and some Nature Babies wraps and they work fantastically. I pop the dirty ones in a nappy sack and then in a bucket with a lid. I then wash them every other day. I know you're not too keen on reuseables but just wanted to let you know that reuseables are far less hassle than I ever thought they'd be!

I use good old huggies as they are cost effective and don't leak.
I considered reuseables but my washing machine/tumble dryer is on far too much are it is so I gathered the extra cost and effects this has on the environment would out weigh any benefit of using reuseables in the first place. I'm also not the most organised so knowing me would run out of clean ones!!
To be honest I've never looked at any nature ones as my purchases are based on cost.
    Sorry can't be more help

hi hun, i use reusables but just wanted to mention that biodigredable nappies don't decompose in landfill, so in reality are no better for the environment that normal disposables.
Flirty filly, i know the reaserch you mean and it was redone recently as before it assumed you washed on 90oc and tumble dryed all you nappies which would be worst than disposables. But the new research found if you wash no higher than 60 an don't always tumble dry it's 40% better for the environment and even better if you use the nappies for a 2nd child and wash at 40oc (which is what we wash at)
(ps i'm not a tree hugger either just wanted to save some money)

We are currently using reusables but have used eco-disposiables in the past. The ones we used were called Bambo and we thought they were great. Perfomed just as well as the major brands, even over night and didn't set my lo's excema off like convential disposables do. Only drawback was you can only buy them on line so you need to be a bit organised to make sure you don't run out.

Wow SB, that is a really good idea - Our black bin is full of nappies that we end up having to take household rubbish to the tip as they won'y empty our bin where I live if the lid isn't shut! i'm going to look into that!
