My ds is 24 weeks old and have been weaning him for the past week or so as he was having 8oz bottles every 2 hours! He has baby breakfast in the morning and pureed veg at tea time (not made it as far as lunch yet). So far he's had sweet potato, carrot, parsnip and various jars. When I have given him carrot or parsnip he starts heiving and then is a little bit sick. (stupid question alert!) does this mean he doesn't like it or should I persevere? At first I thought I wasn't making it smooth enough but he'll eat sweet potato which ends up the same consistancy. He'll also take jars quite happily but I don't want to give him jars all the time as I'm home all day so have plenty of time to do him meals at the moment. I also thought about trying baby led weaning but all he did was squish the food and nothing ended up anywhere near his mouth. Should I just give him what he appears to like or will this lead to a fussy eater? My daughters were never like this and ate everything I put in front of them. They will eat almost anything now.

Personally I would leave those foods for a bit and try them again another time - I keep being told not to give up on a food lo might not like initially as their taste buds change so much and their moods at feeding time too e.g. too tired so not fussed with the food etc.

I started with purees first for breakfast (about 4.5 months) and then evening meal a couple or so weeks later, then when lo reached 6 months I introduced lunchtime as finger foods so you could do that so you know lo gets food during the day from spoonfeeding and still then experiments with food too?

If you have only started a week ago, maybe 2 meals is too much in terms of flavour and quantity? It takes time for them to get used to certain flavours and it can take up to 20 tries before they like some of them, so I would not worry about it, just come back to it later. Most weaning books I have read advise to introduce an extra meal after 2 weeks. We started with lunch, then introduced a small dinner 2 weeks later then breakfast 2 weeks after. We started at 24 weeks too.

Have you tried mixing it with another veg? Millie did this with Squash and sweet potato, so I added a spoon of these to the carrot puree she likes and she ate it. I then mixed half of each, and then just once spoon of carrot to the squash/sweet potato. Now she eats it no problem!

I do a bit of baby led as the same time as puree and it is absolutely normal for the food to go everywhere and for very little to make it to their mouth, but eventually she will get there!

my hv recommended adding another meal after a week and a 3rd after another week, but each meal was just a few tea spoons.

i was also advised to mix with something they like nd gradually increase the thing they don't like and decrease the thing they do.

i followed my health visitors dvice and after a month she is eating 3 good meals, though did take a while to warm up (about 3 weeks)

Thats brilliant - thanks girls! I'll persevere then and mix it with veg he does like. I'll have ago with giving him finger foods as well in a couple of weeks when he is actually 6 months. What sort of foods do you give to your los? I had tried him on a bit of sweet potato but as I said none of it ended in his mouth lol! Probably another daft question but don't they choke?
