    Hi Girls,

My LO has been poorly for 10 days now, he had sickness for 1 day and still has diarrhea today. He is happy and his normal self but his milk is just going straight through him.

I had to take a poo sample to the doctors on friday so im still waiting for the results but they think he may have built up a intollerance to lactose.

I have tried him with SMA Soya Formula tonight so will see if that helps. But has anyone else had this? Will he permantly be intollerant to lactose or is it temporary and if it is tempory how long does it last?

How did your LOs react when you switched back to normal formula?

    xx

    Thanks

Hi Steph - my lo isnt lactose intollerant but i read this on babycentre.com last week:

"If your toddler has had a severe case of diarrhea, his body may temporarily have trouble producing lactase, and he may have symptoms of lactose intolerance for a week or two. (You can give your toddler lactose-free milk during this time.)"

hope your lo feels better soon x

hi, u might find this helpful

    http://www.babyexpert.com/Baby/Is-your-baby-lactose-intolerant%5E/v1

ds is 'cows milk intolerant' (don't know if its the protein or the lactose, or both, but thats how the paeds have all written it on his notes) his started from when he was born although he wasn't officially diagnosed unitl he was 6months, oh and i were both lactose intolerant as babies to, so not a massive surprise. he's one yr old now and he's still precribed sma wysoy (which he's been on since 4.5months), had a follow up with paed a few weeks ago and normally in our case they wld start to test him with cows milk now, which means a day in hospital where the test to see if he's grown out of it or his level of tolerance by starting with 0.5ml and working up til he gets a reaction (not sure what the max is tho)...however ds weight has always been a bit iffy and only now is it on an even keel, so we agreed that we wld wait until he's 2 to do this as i don't want to risk him going down hill again yet, plus he's more likely to have grown out of it by then anyway. however this is to be reviewed in 6 months where they may change their minds then and say to do it then, but we shall see. my understanding is that intolerances can be short term ( a few weeks), long term (a yr or so) or permanent, luck of the draw really. how old is ur lo? if he's fairly newborn i wld imagin its going to be a longterm thing, but if he's older 6m+ then i wld hazard a guess that it will be temprorary but how temprorary there is no way to tell i'm afraid.

    Hi Steph

My LO has been diagnosed as lactose intolerant and was put on Wysoy (SMA soya formula), however there were some adverse effects and we are now using nutramigen 1 formula which seems to suit him much better. Apparently babies who are lactose intolerant also tend to be allergic to the protein in soya formula too.

I was advised to switch my son onto the nutramigen after he had some blood in his stools, apparently this is common with wysoy but is nevertheless worrying. Also I was advised that wysoy isn't suitable for long term use (more than 4-6 months) as it contains phytoestrogens (hormones).

I'm not saying don't use the wysoy, I know some babies who are great on it. I just think that it is best to be aware of potential issues.

Kay and Dylan 8 weeks 2 days.

re the problems with soya, they only actually apply to babies under 6 months...ds was on wysoy from 4.5months, after a month he started being sick again and dietician said under 6 months they can develop an intolerance to soya as the proteins are similar, so was put on nutrimagen, which made it worse, after 2 weeks back on the wysoy (by now 6m old) and stopped being sick completely so he grew out of that one, which is what the paed had said wld happen...also the phyto oestrogens are not recommended for long term use in babies under 6 months, particulalry boys as it can effect their fertility later in life, but again that is for boys under 6 months, and girls, i believe this doesn't apply at all. for ds the risk of him not being able to keep any milk down at all far out weighs the slight chance it may effect his fertility later in life. obv there are plenty of treated milks out there, but only soya is completely dairy free, its important u find the one that works best for ur lo, and many people are fine with nutrimagen or neocate, or pepti, but if u find soya is the best then i wanted to say don't worry about the 'possible' side effects and avoid it, which i know some ppl do when they hear about the possible effects, but if its the only milk they can keep down then its the best one. also it depends who u talk to, my hv and dietician are v anti soya but my gp and paed dismiss all this completely, which can be v confusing. if ur lo is very young then it is worth finding a variety of milks to try to find the best one, but the older they are the less likely they will take nutrimagen etc as they smell and taste a bit iffy lol. xx

my dd is lactose intolerant. She is on sma lactose free which we get prescribed by our doctor. She will be staying on this until she is 12 months old and then we will look at re-introducing lactose to see if she has outgrown the intolerance.
