Lily has had a temp on and off since last night. I gave her Calpol at about midnight and again today at about midday. She doesn't seem too poorly, just a bit subdued, but looks and feels quite hot and flushed. She's drinking milk and water ok.

I'll be putting her to bed in the next hour - even if her temp is ok then, in my situation would you give a dose of Calpol before she goes down? Or do you think I should only give it if her temp is up? I'd like her to have every chance of a good night's sleep as she's tired from being up a lot of last night, which can't help her to shake off whatever it is she's fighting. Obviously I don't want to drug her up unnecessarily though!

i'm not too sure what would be best but i think i would give her calpol as a precaution as you have obviously been keeping an eye on her temp throughout the day but will be more difficult to throughout the night when you are sleeping too. I gave Alfie calpol the other night at 10pm when he had his bottle after his injections as i didn;t want his temp to rise in the night and me not to notice. thats just what i would do though.

I would give it to her if I was in that situation as you know something isn't right help her sleep

Ella has been awful sleeping the last couple of nights and waking up screaming on and off and I resorted to calprofen last night which settled her (after the 3rd lot of waking up and screaming!). She hasn't been right today so i actualy gave her calprofen before bed as a preventative! I think it is still her teeth coming down that are playing her up - she has such rosy cheeks I do calprofen as she doesn't like calpol! Yet?!

    Hope Lily is better soon

I would, just in case and for your own peace of mind. Otherwise if you're like me you will just spend all night disturbing her to take her temp!

Hope LO gets better soon x

You've probably already put her to bed by now, but I'm in agreement with the others. In fact, I've just put my lo to bed with a Calpol nightcap to help him sleep as he's had a rough couple of days too.

Hope she feels better soon xxx

Ok, thanks girls! As it turned out she DID have a temp when I put her down, so it was an easy decision. Thank you for reassuring me that it wouldn't have been a bad thing to do if she hadn't though - useful for future reference.

I know it seems like I'm making a big deal out of nothing but she's just turned one and only ever had Calpol twice before now and both times it was obvious she needed it, so knowing when it's ok to give it is not something I'm confident about yet.

Immense - Lily has also had very rosy cheeks today so maybe they're sympathy teething pains?!

Thanks for your get-better wishes girls.

just a different pov - If lo has been off on and off for a day or so I would have thought about ibuprofen - only because it lasts longer - 8 hours opposed to calpols 4 hours.

I have given calpol when they've gone to bed as a preventative occasionally, but only really when they've been off during the day (or in MJs case when she's had a bad day reflux and poo wise...)

Thanks girls! I didn't know that about ibuprofen lasting longer - very useful to know!

She seems ok today, well enough to go to the childminder who took her temp a few times and said it was fine, and that she's been cheerful all day. She's gone down wihtout any meds tonight. Thanks for the heads-up though Lara - she's still looking quite rosy so will def keep a close eye on it.
