    Need some advice.

When I had my first I weaned her at 3 months - the advice from HV at the time (she is now 8)

When I had my second I weaned her at 4 months - the advice from HV at the time (she is now 4)

My wee boy is 9 weeks old tomorrow and I swear he needs more than milk. He was 8lb 15 at birth and that was him 10 days early. He hasnt been weighed for 2 weeks due to the health centre closed over xmas but OH stood on the scales with him and the difference was 15lbs so I have a big boy on my hands. He is demolishing 6oz bottles at the moment and can taking up to 7 of them a day!!! I know the advice at the moment is that you should weight until 6 months to wean but theres no way him (or my sanity!) will last that long! I've tried him on 7oz but he never takes the last ounce so its a waste of milk.

    Any advice?

No advice sorry but all ican say is my little boy is EXACTLY the same. Last time i had him weighed was at 8 weeks and then he was 13lb! hes now 10 weeks and i dont reckon he will be far off 14 or 15 lb. He also takes 6oz bottles and sometimes upto 7 a day so i know exactly how u feel!

I too had a hungry baby. She was 9lb 6 born however didn't put weight on at the rate yours has. She also showed signs of milk not being enough at about 9-10 weeks. If it hadn't been for all the advice I would have started weaning then. By around 12 weeks hungry milk just did not fill her.

Its contrary to advice HVs etc will give but I found I had to add some baby rice to her bottles. Initially I just gave her a dreamfeed at night with rice, it was only a 4oz feed and I added 2 heaped tablespoons. I needed to use the next level teat as it was thick. I found this helped satisfy her for the next day and gradually I had to add rice to more feeds. I know that technically giving her rice is weaning but I had to fill her somehow and I felt this was like a compromise.

I feel I did the right thing as when she got weighed she continued to follow the same line in her book, which wouldn't have happened if I hadn't topped her up with some rice.

At the end of the day you have to do what you feel, I just didnt tell HV what I was up to as I knew she wouldnt agree so didnt need to listen to her tell me not to!

I agree with the above...you should listen to your instincts. Sound slike you done well by your other two and remember advice is just advice. your the one who has to live with a hungry baby not the hv. You do what you thinks right. I know i will!

It's amazing to me how the advice changes! My mum said she weaned me at three months as I was a hungry baby (I was 8lb 5 born) but now they say wait 6 months??! I'm pregnant and the mind boggles!
