Hi, I wonder if anyone can help?
I'm still struggling to establish pain free breastfeeding with my 5 week old. He's not to bad when on my right breast but gets very agitated on the left side, coming on and off repeatedly and really chewing my nipple. He arches back and drags his head back - just seems like he can't get a proper latch, even though much less trouble with the other side. He also seems to be worse in late afternoon/ early evening. I have been using nipple shields, esp on the left side as am so 'chewed' but would lik to stop as it's such a faff especially in the middle of the night.
    Any ideas
    Thanks Nic

It could be that your let down reflex is stronger in your left breast meaning the milk comes out too fast and he finds it hard to cope with swallowing it? Do you think this could be the problem?

Kyra does exaclty the same as your baby when my breasts are very full and literally squirt loads of milk in her mouth she gets very fidgity and squirms around. I sometimes find expressing a little before a feed helps as it will come out slower.

    Hiya

I found this with my left breast as well in the earlier days (lo is now 11 weeks old and much better) and in fact now if he wants a really long feed, I get really sore even now. I much prefer feeding him from my right side and I always get loads more milk from there as well.

The only thing I did was put on Lansinoh religiously throughout the day and use nipple shields. I found that if I used them for 24 hours, my nipple would improve sufficiently for a few more days to do without them. I think my left nipple is flatter than the right which could explain things.

    Good luckx

I was gonna say could it be wind??my lo gets very windy and with u saying its worse in an evening it sounds v similar!i have 2 wind grace a few times during feeding in an evening or else she dosent settle for bed and is constantly squirming and pulling on me whilst feeding. If u do think its that u could try infacol or gripe water before a feed,iv heard this can help and am considering trying in an evening if grace keeps being windy at this time!shes now 13 weeks and still suffers with wind although its stated "breastfed babies dnt get wind/colic"!she must be an exception to the rule!!good luck xx
