Thanks Nicola, i'll have a proper read of that later. I did hear something on the news earlier, but as usual junior decided to make noises at the bit i wanted to listen to!

Is it just me or is this just a big panic over nothing???

Most sensible parents would only give their kids medication if necessary.

People at school were talking about going out and stocking up on Medised and calpol! Calpol isn't even on the list!

I'm the same Emma, we never give the max dosage. Although we've never given any of those, just the magic calpol!!

Your right Caroline, its the stupid ones, who probably wouldn't even read the report that have obviously caused this scare. I used chesty cough syrup on Tate as soon as he was one as he had a bad cough that winter, and it helped. Won't be able to do the same for Luka now until he is two.

We like calpol.

I got the calcough for chatelle and the boots one year+ for riley when they both had that cough and cold bug.

Im not overly worried as if there were real big concerns they would have said sooner.

Hmmm i agree with you, Caroline, It does sound like theres a bit of over panic there and like some of you, i'm careful not to give the maximum dose of any medicines or at least only when one of mine is very poorly and needs it but thats rare.
Amber's having a dose of medised at night at the moment as she's teething but hopefully she can gowithout in the next few days, other than that i stick to magic calpol too!!

I too agree with you Caroline. Hollie has only had calpol and the baby nurofen (cant remember what its called). And i always gove half the normal dose as it seem to work so no point giving her anymore. But i always read the instructions first and am careful with my dosing.

Personally i dont see the point in using cough mixtures as i have found they dont really work on me, so i would think the same for her. I am happy to use calpol if she is in pain with teething or has a temperature, but other than that i'd rather not use too many medicines in her.

I agree with you Caroline, i think it is a panic over nothing, i only ever give Jessica medised have tried calpol but it does not seem to work on her!
Jessica only has medicine if she is teething and i always make sure if she needs any more that she has the stated hours between each dose.

I think if you stick to the amounts stated you will be fine. I will probably not use cough medicine with my 13 month old son until they bring out the new guidelines because I really need to be clear in my own head what is the safest amount to give but I think you can say with most medicines especially ones like calpol-night that it is very harmful to go over the recommended dosage so why are they taking them off the shelves? Perhaps I read the article wrong?
29/03/2008 at 12:49
I agree - I think most parents are sensible and responsibly read the instructions. There are so many scares nowadays - if you panicked over everything then all parents would be permanent nervous wrecks!

I've always used Calpol and Infant Ibruprofen for Jimmers. He needs both together as we have problems getting his temperature down - twice we've ended up in hospital with him. I would never have used both meds together if it wasn't the hospital that told me to do it.

We've rarely used cough medicines as they don't seem to have much effect - maybe that's why people have gone over the recommended dose? For a cough and cold we tend to go for Vicks on the chest or the pillow drops, extra pillows to prop up and a bath in a steamy bathroom!
