A few of you have already asked me and I know some of you out there love a birth story so I thought I would post mine!! On Saturday I had a show, but didn’t think anything of it. I sat and chatted to a few of you during our cyber baby shower, and got mild period type pains. By 1.15am I was in pain with backache and period pain. I rang the hospital who said I could either go in or wait until the morning. I decided to try and get some sleep. I had a heat patch on my back and my wheat bag on my tummy. I was up every hour though, I assume with contractions looking back. At 6 I woke Gareth up and told him that we were going to hospital, I rang them and my parents to get them to meet us there. We finished packing stuff and set off on the 50 min drive to hospital. By this point I was having contractions every 15 to 20 mins. There was 5cm of snow on the ground and it was freezing and snowing! As Gareth hasn’t driven in a year I drove us to the hospital, it took 90 mins due to the conditions and I was still having contractions. On arrival at the hospital I needed the loo and someone came bashing on the door thinking I was having the baby in the loo!!!! We went to the ward and they found I was 3-4cm dilated! No wonder I was in agony. There was another woman due in theatre but they decided my need was greatest and off we went! On the 6th attempt to get a spinal block needle into my back they mentioned a general!! No way, hosay!!! I was sat on the table hunched over a cushion, singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, I was at Anfield on the Kop watching Liverpool beat Manchester United and Steven Gerrard had just scored! That worked and the spinal went in!!!! It took 8 minutes for Leighton to come out! The relief at hearing his continuous cry was amazing. It took 32 minutes to release Bronwyn and an emergency call to a doctor. And she stopped crying and everyone went into panic mode! They weighed Leighton and asked if we wanted to know what he weighed, when they said 10lb 7oz my response was “is that all?” and the theatre staff all burst out laughing!! At this point I went into shock, it all happened so quickly. I needed a sugar drip and lots of cold compresses on my head!  I was soon back on the ward celebrating with a glass of pepsi max!!! And texting you lot!!! Sorry for the essay!!!!!

Caroline sounds like you coped really well during the night then. And to drive all that way whilst in labour, yiu must be mad!!! I know i couldnt have driven when i was in labour.

Lol at your reaction to Leighton's weight i bet that gave you both a shock, especially as boys tend to be bigger. Leighton is gorgeous anyway and i am pleased that you are all settling in well. xx

Thanks for sharing that with us Caroline, I love a good birth story.

I also drove during labour and was 3 cms dilated, but on a clear dry afternoon, 10 mins down the road. I think you did very well to drive all that way and for that long in those conditions.
