Toddlers & Older Children <

As a paramedic I am often called to children who are ill or have hurt themselves. I was checking on the internet recently and discovered that over 200 children a year die whilst at school. Further investigation revealved that only 80 schools in the UK have a defibrillator and are trained to use it. Does your childs school have one?
I am trying to encourage my local schools to buy a defibrillator so that if the worst happens the school can give the chiled a greater chance of survival. If you have a child at school ask the school if they have a defibrillator and if are trained to use it.
I sell defibrillators at http://www.oakwoodfirstaid.co.uk/Defibrillator/cat1551612_1450496.aspx which would give you an indication of how much they cost. Very little when compare to a childs life.
Below are some figures from the British Heart Foundation which may make you realise how important defibrillators are.
Did you know that according to the British Heart Foundation 30,000 people in the UK each year have a cardiac arrest outside of the hospital environment. Of these 30,000 people :
Only 2% will survive to leave hospital if no CPR is performed until an ambulance arrives
Only 4% will survive to leave hospital if CPR is performed prior to the ambulance arriving
30% will survive to leave hospital if an AED is use within 3-4 minutes of the cardiac arrest happening.
