Sooooo car went for service this afternoon. Had a couple of minor things needing fixing too. Friend of ours is a mechanic and does it for us at a good price out of hours at his garage. He also comes and fetches it and brings it back.
I get a call 15minutes after he picks it up. It's broken down. WTF?! Had it 6 years, never a problem. Its an 02 reg audi a3. well cared for and no major problems. Really low mileage for its age.
He gets a tow to his (which costs us £90), turns out there has been a minor oil leak and computer sensor failure all at the same time. Meaning the car hasn't told us oil has run out and its gone much quicker than it should. H checks it regularly. Result? A very messed up engine.
He's has to take the engine apart (which will cost us a couple of hundred or so, even him doing it mates rate) and then he can see damage. There is a high chance it needs a new engine. Which won't be worth doing. There is a small chance it's repairable but that will be expensive too.
So we are up sh*t creek and no paddle. We'll have to borrow money to buy a new car somehow. And scrap a car that should be worth atleast 3K. He's sorting a car for us to borrow in the mean time but it's so sh*te. It really is. Just when you think things are going well!
No way i can miss work tomorrow and we have 1 car. So just had to mess up everyones days getting mum to come here to watch P and MIL to give me a lift to work.
I am having a strong drink. Why is nothing ever ever ever simple?!?!?!?!??!?!?!

Oh no! I hope something can get sorted and as cheaply as possible xx

Oh dear. It never rains but it pours.
Hope the borrowed car arrives quickly and that you can sort a replacement.

Hope the damage is repairable or you can get hands on a replacement engine quick time. Shocked a mate is charging you £90 for a tow plus a few hundred to diagnose the problem. Surely that should just be all in the job cost. Hope its sorted quickly.

Thanks ladies. Still all up in the air. Complete nightmare. Belle he had to come and get some one to tow him who charged him £90, so we have to pay that back. If the car can be fixed it'll be part of the job but otherwise we still need to pay him for his time. The engine has to completely come apart and go back together again.

I know what your saying my H does engine changes all day long. Im shocked your mechanic needed to pay someone £90 to tow him. Im always out helping h shift motors around. Maybe my H is too soft with his customers. Any news on the engine yet? You got your replacement ok to use in the meantime?

Waiting for H to get home with news, he's been chatting to mechanic this afternoon and organising the replacement car but not had a chance to speak to him yet. So fingers crossed it's positive but it's been a nightmare trying to sort it all whilst we're both at work. I've been browsing autotrader to see what we can afford to buy if worst case happens. Answer is very little without the money from selling current car.
Was going to wait for him to get home to open the wine but as i've just put P to bed i think it might be time!

Where are you based? My H has couple runarounds up for sale at minute. And its definitely wine time. Just wish i had some!

Tonbridge so i don't think i'm too far from you am i?
H has just called to say he's waiting to hear from his mate still. Ugh. Good news is his dad has offered to lend us some money to get something decent. Which is a relief as a back up if we can't get ours back on the road.
I bloody hate stupid cars!

Not far no. Glad you can borrow some money if worse case scenario. Fingers crossed its sorted x

Just spoken to the guy. It's going to cost nearly as much to fix as it's worth. So my lovely car is probably going to have to go for scrap.
22/03/2013 at 19:18
Oh bollox! Has he said what damage has been done?
22/03/2013 at 19:26
A massive long list; pistons, cambelt, gaskits, bolts and some other stuff. A whole replacement engine won't be worth it either. I'm so upset, i was really attached to that car!!
