My car is knackered at the moment Got stuck in a flood on Sunday evening about a mile from my house and it cut out. Called the AA who were going to send a recovery truck, but we were in a really dangerous position on the bend of a country lane and more cars were coming racing by not realising the water was so deep. A guy stopped and gave me a tow home, called the AA and because of his kindness and the fact that I don't have homestart they cancelled the callout. Bought a new battery but that's not made a difference. Going to get an airfilter on the way home.
If I need to make a claim on the insurance how long do I have? I can't see anywhere in the policy docs a time limit on making a claim but I don't want to try to get it fixed, find out it needs a new engine, make a claim and then be told I should've done it within X amount of time of the incident.
I'm lost without my car!

Give them a ring and see? What car you got? My H might be able to help with tips on what to do or help replace / locate an engine.

I don’t know the answer but I would have thought that you have to be pretty quick. I know with our company insurance we have to notify within 24 hours, but our policy makes that very clear.
What car have you got? When it cut out did you try to restart the engine? Did any water come into the car? What does it do now when you try to start the engine?
My H wrote my car off by driving it through flood water, but it was very, very deep (it filled the footwells and he had to climb out of the window because opening the door would have let it flood in), and it was a small turbo diesel engine which are the worst for sucking up water apparently.

Sorry it's taken so long to come back to this. Crap week. No water came into the car but there was a car going too fast the other way through the flooded bit of road and they splashed water on to my car as well as it being quite deep where I drove into it. So far I've replaced the battery and air filter, recovery guy tried bump starting it today but no luck. If it was the starter motor that should've done it apparently?
I've reported it to my insurance company, checked my policy and I had 7 days so it's within limits. They will recover it on Monday if needs be; managed to get it to my mechanic's garage today if he can fix it great, otherwise it's looking like a total write off Thankfully I have protected no claims but it'll still affect my policy and it's total poop that my poor car is probably knackered.
