I'm thinking ahead here but we're planning to get M a bike for her birthday, she'll be three. Was considering a balance bike but don't know much about them. Any experiences/opinions please ladies?

We got both E and J trikes when they were 1.5ish and they never really got played with.
We got both kids a bike with stabilisers for their 3rd birthdays, it took E a while to get the hang of it but J picked it up immediately.

thanks SW, ah a bike with stabilisers is maybe worth considering then. I'm tempted to take her to toys r us and let her have a shot and see how she gets on with them....balance bikes seem a good idea to me but I don't know anyone who's kid has had one!

N has a balance bike but hardly uses it, he is good on it when he does go out on it but has always much preferred his scooter. I was all for getting a normal bike and possibly stabilisers (it's how we all learnt wasn't it?!) but H bought him the balance one and it just sits on our balcony gathering snow. If I were you I would go to a big Toys R Us and see what she is attracted to or better at as you don't want to waste your money on something she might not like.

Thanks LB, I think that's probably what I'll do

We bought A a bike with stabilisers for her 3rd birthday. We looked at balance bikes but once she had seen you could get pretty pink bikes with streamers and a dolly seat at the back that's all she would have been happy with

Ha ally I can totally see that happening here!

Late to this but Miss CV had a balance bike and LOVED it... she could go so fast on it that a trike was just boring for her. In fact, she was always bored on a trike even befoe the balance bike came on the scene (had one of those conertible ones with a parnt handle from 1). That said, she had the balance bike from she was 2, so I dont know about buying one for a 3 year old? She got a 'real' bike when she was 3 and 4 months (despite loving the balance bike, she hated not having pedals like the big kids!) and enjoys it too - but she had a go on the balance bike for the first time in a while at the weekend and loved how fast she could go on it (we, possibly stupidly, defeated the purpose of the balance bike and have allowed her to have stabilisers on the pedal one - I was all for giving it to her without stabilisers but Mr CV was too nervous).
