How do cashback sites work and which ones would you recommend?

I use top cash back (here's my referral link if you decide to use that one)
You usually just click on a link from that site to where you're going to buy something, and it picks it up and gives you a certain percentage based on how much you've spent.
There is quidco too, but I've never used it - you get charged a fee on that one, and a lot of the cashback amounts are the same or very similar, so I've stuck with topcashback since it's free

i use Quidco all the time and have made quite a bit of money including £80 when I got my car insurance last year.
Here's my referral link if its any good to you?

Another vote for Topcashback here. So far, they seem to pay equal to or slightly more than quidco, and charge no fee, whereas quidco charges a fiver a year I think.

I've used quidco for over a year now, prefer it to topcashback although can't really justify why lol. Think there were things I wanted that paid more on quidco so just stuck with it. I've made over 300 this year, things like insurance, Sky, mobile phone contracts pay out loads. I've had £160 from Sky in the last 4 months!

We use Kidstart or Ffrees Family Finance but the money goes into Child trust funds rather than back to you directly.
