I'm such a planner, I can't just 'be', always excited about what's coming up. I'm resting up a bit today so while my body is still my mind is twitchy!... Next year, when our mortgage deal is up, we want to borrow more money against the house and as the last thing to get done here, have an extension to give a kitchen/diner and use our now-dining room as a playroom/TV den type of thing. I want to get some quotes for this work whilst I'm part-time over the summer, so we can get an idea of cost and what's possible/what's not. This means I want a rough idea of layout to be able to speak with the builders.
But I am *useless* at this stuff. Firstly, I hardly use the kitchen because I have a hubby who is in his element cooking. Secondly, I'm not a very practical person and things obvious to someone else don't occur to me!
Anyone any good at this stuff? I imagine some of you have definitely done this in your own homes. If I upload a scrappy pic of what the space would look like (i.e. shape, permanent doorways and windows etc) would anyone care to steer me in the right direction? Or in any direction?!

My Hubby is a designer.
If you can send/upload me a rough pic of dimensions, doorways and windows etc, then he can draw it up to scale for you if you like?

What a lovely offer! Honestly, I don't need that much help (though it's very kind) but some sensible suggestion would be grand. I'll do something on my laptop in a bit and stick it here, see what you think? Many thanks!

Yeah sure :-), my hubby is currently not mobile with a bad knee so he's got plenty of time to help in any way (and he'd love something to do besides watching films) lol.

you can download free software www.roomarranger.com when we were converting our loft I used it to plan what would fit and to work out space etc, was great to visualise what would work etc and what size furniture would fit., in fact I've done the whole house on it.

Ooh, room arranger. Love and hate in equal measure! So frustrated as can't quite get it to do what I want it to. Said I was useless!
Poca, am going to upload 3 pics. One is as the space is now (kitchen, knackered old conservatory next to it, and a lean to area - essentially outside - off that. Then a couple of punts we had together, as to how the space might be used. We know we want open-plan as much as poss, and the dining table nearer the right as you look (closest to the main house). The longest wall is approx 21ft and the widest wall is 17ft, once the space merges in to one.
We don't have a dishwasher and are ambivalent either way. We want a large freestanding oven, a double fridge freezer, a washing machine and a tumbler.
I can't picture any of this in real life. Have no clue whether there's room to walk round the things I've haphazardly dumped on the screen! Our kitchen is a decent size now though, so I don't understand why this 'new' version looks to have virtually no storage for food etc.
Anyway, enough waffle. I'd be interested in any help/suggestions :)
