For F's birthday present we're thinking of getting her a table / desk and chair for her room, as she loves doing crafty things and is wanting to spend more time in her room, so it seems a nice way to make it more grown up for her
She'll be 5, and I don't know what kind of size to get her. Ikea seem to do nice ones, but will she be growing out of the 'childrens' ones in a year or so? A full size desk might swamp her room and be an odd present, but a toddler size one would be useless fairly soon

Could you get a normal size (ie height) desk not necessarily a children's one and get this too:
That way as she gets bigger you can lower the height of the chair?

We got a normal size desk for E for Christmas a few years ago and she loved it. I did think it was a bit of an odd present but I knew she would love it. We got her a proper swivel office chair which lowers/heightens.
It was probably one of the best Christmas presents we've ever bought her. It is used every day and is great for storange. Hers has 3 drawers down the side.

We got a desk which is integral with my daughter's sleep station. It didn't come with a chair so last christmas we bought her one (she was 5 and a half). We got an adult sized one as that fits with the desk - I think a toddler size one would be too small for a 5 year old very quickly. I got a folding bright pink metal one from Homebase's Habitat range for about £10. She had spent all year asking for it and was thrilled to get it although it sounds like an odd present to buy a young child.
