A week tomorrow til payday, I know its going to be a long one! I don't have an overdraft so I literally end up getting down to a few pounds in my bank account, and having to budget really carefully - like last month I had £32 in my last week but had to get fuel and some food and a birthday card. I managed it by getting the minimum amount of fuel to see me through and just buying the veg and fruit/milk and using up meat from the freezer.
Everything seems to cost a fortune and my kids seems to be eating LOADS atm!
Do other people have to do this too?

I think mine is slightly more embarrassing a confession. I get paid at the end of the month and then get maintenance at a different point and child benefits at another point and finally tax credits at a nother point. Just before each payment comes in my bank balance gets down to pounds. It really zips up and down several times a month. As soon as money comes in it goes out as it is earmarked for soemthing. If I think about it too much I feel sick and dizzy. The other month there was more than a £100 in my account and instantly knew that there was a bill I'd forgotten to pay and I needed to find it urgently!
At the moment Morrisons are doing spend £40 a week and get a voucher towards Christmas. £40 really doesn't go very far especially when a box of cereal for B costs £2.69 Luckily I can U anything at the moment. Their special yoghurts cost £1.75 for four - it makes me weep.

I used to, when I was a single Mum on benefits.
Now, thankfully no. I'm lucky, in that if I need more monney, I just ask my H to transfer some (We don't have a joint account, he's terrible with money)

AK - can I ask your H as well?
20/10/2013 at 11:44
Yes. Its not so bad as my H is weekly paid so we never have to wait to long.
its better lately as we managed to get rid of some debt, but i have been known to fill up my card on pay at the pump to go overdrawn, even when i dont have an overdraft, if iv needed fuel for work and skint.

QI I guess it must be nice to have a few deposits coming in through the month though, keeps you on top of it.
I have to add, my H does buy food too but he pays all the bills so money is just as tight. He used to get paid halfway through the month which worked out well as one of us was skint but the other had money so it was fine but now he gets paid at the same time as me! So we have really good food shops for one half of the month and not so good for the second half!

MrsClarke would your card go through if you didn' t have an overdraft? I made the mistake once of filling up thinking I had enough cash and then realizing I didn't, I had to fill a form in I felt like a criminal.

michy lou, it does providing you have more than 1 pound in your account.when you pay at the pump it authorises your card before it knows how much your putting in. i dont get charged unauthorised od fees so used to do it a bit. needs must.
20/10/2013 at 12:20
Oh I see, yes definitely needs must .

Yep. Always. H earns a good wage but the cost of living it so high. We have minus £250 and a week till payday...
20/10/2013 at 19:19
Yup, we live in our over draft :-/ it's terrible!

I try not to but I'm also clearing some debts and what with Christmas and birthdays coming up. I would go to H but a) it's my fault I'm in a bit of debt, and b) I feel like a naughty girl when I talk to him about money.

Every.Single.Month. 5 days until payday and about £6 left tonight

Those of you that get right down before payday, are you saving too (ie pension and/or savings) or is your wage just going on living costs?
20/10/2013 at 21:09
No, pension is taken from my pay packet, the rest I just spend on shite or making an overpayment on my CC.
20/10/2013 at 21:23
Ah right sorry I meant private pension not work pension - I know some people have them.
I was just generally intrigued as some people will say they're skint but they have out loads away iykwim.
*put loads away

I wish! Nope we have no savings at all since having E and dropping a day at work. Skint definitely means skint here!
20/10/2013 at 23:11
Yep :( Trying very hard to improve things. We have good incomes and have cut back as much as we can. Mortgage, bills and childcare adds up :(
