My neighbour throws things out on or before its use by date as she wont eat anything on that date.
She gives loads to me like a pack of unopened bread rolls which will go out of date in 2 days as she wont eat them on those days.
I never check dates, just make sure its edible. I eat fish as fresh as possible and meat but most other stuff I judge myself

Depends what it is.
Meat, I do, but others, I see that they look/smell ok

Meat and eggs i would chuck on the date they recommend but fruit veg bread etc would all be on a case by case depending on how it looks.

Use by dates, I usually do, particularly for meat or fish (although I go to the day, not the day before) - other stuff like yogurts, etc you can usually tell if they've gone off and my go a day or two over on them.
Best before I tend to ignore and just go on whether the food looks edible still or not, although MrDD is a lot more rigid and won't eat something past it's best before date if he knows!

I wouldn't keep eggs past their sell by date but iv heard lots of people do. I buy reduced meat that's nearing its sell by,and bread etc and I freeze it. I'd eat yoghurt a day or 2 after its sell by date.

Nope I eat anything as long as it doesn't smell, hasn't grown something and in the case of bread isn't green or rockhard. H thinks I'm a minger. I just say it's the Irish blood in me.

Best before I ignore and use my own judgment, use by I'm mote wary of, especially if M will be eating it

I do the smell test mostly, if it smells bad or looks bad then i don't eat it. I've eaten yoghurts a week past their date which tasted fine, same with eggs, i do the drop them in a cup of water trick.
