Shall we start with Holby CP?
out of them all which ones do you think have it closest?
30/11/2012 at 21:16
I don't watch Holby.
I don't think any of them a true to real life. I watch Eastenders, Corrie and Emmerdale.

I don't think so as if that much happened in real life you would have a nervous breakdown and if they were more real life based there would be an awful lot of watching people watch tv and surf the net!

I don't watch soaps, so couldn't say. Although from things i've heard the school Mums say about EE, it doesn't sound true to life.

I agree, none of them are even remotely true to life (well the ones I have seen anyway) I do think they have everyday life experiences in them. Tyrone/Kirsty storyline and they play it well.

I don't watch soaps so can't really comment but thought I would chip in... at the confidence class I went to yesterday there was four of us present. One woman had 7 children, the first was still born, then two more, then her fourth was taken away by her sister in law (she hadn't wanted to give her up), escaped her violent partener, met someone else and had three more children. Me with my story. Another lady who had travelled the world with the MOD and had a prem daughter who had various issues. The fourth ladys first daughter had died of cot death and then another daughter and eventually reported her violent partner to the police whom was sent to prison then met someone else and had two more children. So I do think if you massively condense ANYONE's life done to a couple of sentences it is very dramatic and tramuatic wiht highs as well as the lows and that soap operas condense ten peoples lives for each one, IYSWIM? So perhaps actually they are true to life we just don't see it all played out in front of us all the time.

I'm told my family could be a soap family.
My Mum married my Uncle. He was married to my Dad's sister previously. So my Uncle became my Dad, and my cousins became my brother and Sister.
My Dad's oldest brother has a different Dad to my Dad and his other 4 siblings - My Dad's Uncle. My Nan had a baby with one brother, who died, then got with another brother, who is my Grandad.
My Mum was engaged to a bloke, but then went with his brother, and had my sister. She met my Dad when my sis was 6 weeks old, he brought her up. They had my sis, who died aged 1 hour, then me, then my youngest sister.
My Dads gf dumped him for my Aunts (dads sis) boyfriend. He dumped her, by then my Mum and Dad had got back together after over 20 years apart.
My ex fiance sh@gged my sister 2 months before our wedding. This same sister threatened to leave C without a Mum, smashed my window with a can of Carling, and gave my 13 week prem baby redbull.
With all the step and half siblings, i'm 1 of 9. Only 1 is a full sibling, and 1 of them i've never met. Although, when i was pg with C, his gf was pg too, and we were both in the hospital waiting room at the same time. My Mum and his Mum (my dads ex wife) recognised each other, and I locked eyes with my brother when my mum pointed him out, and my Surname was called out, and he looked up on hearing the name.
My Dad also said there's a chance I have another bro or sis out there somewhere.

ER your family sound like my H's! we still aren't sure whether my H's dad is actually his dad or whether his uncle is actually his dad. he has various brothers and sisters out there whom he has never met.
My life's been a bit like a soap opera. depressing really.....

How was the confidence class P? did it help you with anything?
30/11/2012 at 22:22
My family would keep Jeremy Kyle busy, that's for sure.
One of my cousins was actually on JK. *white trash*
30/11/2012 at 22:23
I would love to take H's mother on JK, he would have a field day with her
30/11/2012 at 22:24
Wow, ER, I am so confused reading that. I've read it a few times and still haven't got a clue.
01/12/2012 at 00:14
Yeah, people tend to get confused.
I also forgot to add, that my Dad's first wife, and mother of his eldest child (the brother ive never met) came out as a *** just after they split. I'm sure there's more stuff too.
SM, sounds like your H's family and my family would push even JK over the edge.

If hospitals were like Holby no patients would ever see a nurse because they're all bonking the doctors but on the upside people who have major heart surgery would be home within a day do saving the nhs a fortune in bed days!
There was a drama about a make gynaecology consultant who was an ar$e and dumped a lot of cr¥p on his junior teams especially if he made a mistake. Can't for the life of me remember the name but it was very dark and sadly true to life (was based on books written by an ex doctor) so probably too real for the general public.
ER-I'd love to see a picture of your family tree!!

I'm an occupational therapist and my bugbear is that occupational therapy is NEVER mentioned on hospital shows or in soaps when someone becomes disabled. They might mention physio, but never OT.
01/12/2012 at 17:07
Peanut-I share your frustration. I'm a Speech and Language Therapist and we are nowhere to be found! I'm sure there was an OT in corrie years ago who ended up with Liz macdonald but I think the actor had also played a physio in the same soap so it wasnt quite right either as obviously an OT can't be a PT as well ;) x
01/12/2012 at 21:44
Yeah if OT is ever portrayed on TV its normally done by a physio!
02/12/2012 at 00:58
I can't stand Holby, it actually makes me shout at the tv!
They job swap so randomly, like the girl who was a midwife then was suddenly running ITU. Theatres are just off the corridor and anyone who has had major heart surgery within five minutes is sitting up in bed with a cup of tea. My H is a physio and I remember watching one scene where the physio was told that they weren't a doctor and I felt like throwing my tv out the window! My H makes plenty of decisions about his patients without doctors, argh!
Don't get me started on Hollyoaks. If they have a medical advisor they should be sacked. Anyone in a coma wakes up, never needs any rehab and goes back home the next day no problem. Ash was in a coma aided mysteriously with only an oxygen mask. Lindsay managed to somehow do a bit of CPR to a DNR patient which not only brought him out of his coma, he was sitting up in bed the next day, strangely cured.
Everyone on a soap is nursed in a side room all by themselves with never a staff member on site. Especially if they're ventilated. Usually through an ancient machine.
It drives me nuts, can you tell?!
02/12/2012 at 09:27
LLL - brilliant! You can tell you are an ally of the Allied Health Professions! It makes the real world very hard when people expect the same recovery as they have seen on TV. Rehab isn't glamorous or quick so doesn't make good tv
