It's our first time booking a holiday as a family and my H is shocked by the price. Looking at 2 weeks end of aug/beg sept for 3 adults and a toddler and its coming out at £4k full board inc flights and transfers which I don't think is too bad. Is 4* hotel in Austrian Tirol, free crèche and activities etc
h thinks we could get a lot cheaper in tenerife or somewhere but I think prob fairly standard family holiday prices
so what is your normal budget? am I way out? It's a lot of money for a holiday!

I can't seem to find any cheap deals really - there are 5 of us, 3 kids who will be 13,6 and 16 months when we travel, plus me and h. It's our first time going all inc but figured with the kids for snacks etc would be easier this year and we've paid 3800 for 2 weeks. It is a lot of money but think it is about right for high season (July) we aren't helped that we live in Edinburgh and the furthest I'm prepared to go re airport is Newcastle - the same holiday was £200 pp cheaper from stansted - great for mum and dad who've booked to join us from there! There is no doubt about it that was top end of our budget, was looking at Cyprus for the same type of resort and that was nearer £4.5k. Nowadays with the kids I'm not prepared to go to some rubbish place I want to holiday in a resort with a degree of quality so am prepared to spend all in about £4k ideally for 10 days or 2 weeks. When we go to a family villa in Javea in Spain the flights for us all can be up to £2k alone from Edinburgh and that's self catering. We are stuck as h refuses to take SS out of school whereas it doesn't bother me at all. I had many a holiday during term time but the compromise is he gets to holiday with his in laws! I don't think holidays are cheap anymore and they are definitely a luxury.

We don't spend much on holidays, I can't justify the cost. This year we're paying £650 for a week with Eurocamp

Go out of school holidays if you can. But a 4 star holiday in a hotel is not going to be cheap in August.
We're not paying anywhere near that but we're self catering in Dorset. I'd love a 4 star hotel!

I think a good quality hotel abroad will be around the 4k mark for a family in school hols. We thought it was getting too expensive to cruise now we've two kids, but we were shocked by how expensive a comparable holiday would be without the added bonus of entertainment etc. We've managed to get a good deal on a cruise for a week in April as our schools break up a week later than the Southampton ones, so we're not having to pay as much for the children. It's worthwhile looking out for these type of things to avoid the peak costs of the school hols and not having to take your kids out of school.

Around £550 for a week in Devon in July!

Depends on the type of holiday.
We can spend about £100 for a 3 night caravan break - but then spending money is usually about £600-700 plus fuel costs.
Our last few years summer holiday have been at a friends villa in Spain. I used to get cheap flights with my old work so the holiday would only cost about £2k including spending money & car hire (2 weeks in summer holidays) Because that holiday is cheap we've been known to also do a week all inclusive in Cyprus the May holidays for 4 of us is usually about £3k.
However this year as I don't get the flights Spain is coming in at £3k inc spends so we're looking around. For 2 adults 2 kids 2 weeks in summer holidays Balerics, Cyprus, Greece etc all coming in about £4.5k. Mexico however is coming in at under £6k so probably going to book that.

I was shocked at the prices of package holidays. For the last few years we've booked separate flights and an apartment but this year we have booked a 4* all inclusive for 2 adults and 2 children for £2000 at the end of July. Ideally we wanted to go for 10 days - 2 weeks but it was so much money we couldn't really afford it. It was coming up an extra £700 for a 10 day holiday so we stuck to the 7 day one.

We're going in May. Thankfully I aren't stuck to school holidays at the moment, so we can go whenever. So we're going 31st may for two weeks to Icmeler in turkey. We're hiring an apartment and going self catering. flights for two adults, a 3 year old and a 2 year old have come in at around £1100, that's including pre-booked seats and 23kg luggage each. The apartment is costing £188 for the two weeks for all of us. Then obviously we will have food/drinks snacks etc on top of that, so i'm probably looking at around £600-800 spends.

£188 for an apartment in May wowsers! Where you staying exactly?

You've got yourself a bargain there Chids.

It is a bargain. Accommodation is generally really cheap in icmeler, we will have to add air-con on which I think is about £5 per night, but still, it's pretty cheap for two weeks accommodation. My uncle and his family stayed there last year and said it was lovely, so we've got 5 rooms booked there I think this year, and there is about 12 of us going
We're stopping at the 1st one, the Sahin palace

Actually, i'm gutted, it's £180 now for the two weeks, we could have saved £8

We paid £1.6k for 2weeks AI for the 3 of us last year in Kos with very little spending money needed - was a great hotel, lovely food, C spend loads of time in the kids club which gave us time to ourselves, but it was term time so know we won't get something at that price again for a long time!
