We're going on holiday there in July and have never been there, don't really know anything about the area. I've heard that there are good beaches, what else is there to do? Especially if the weather is not so good, with 3 kids under 8. We're staying in a Hoseasons lodge and it has indoor and outdoor pools and possibly an on site pizza place.
Any recommendations for must-do activities or places to eat out etc?
I am very excited, it almost feels like going abroad with the ferry trip (not been abroad since Summer 2008!) so it's a big trip for us. I haven't yet started a countdown but I will shortly!!!!

Where are you staying on the island out of interest? It doesn't actually matter in terms of location really as the island is so small you can drive everywhere in a day.
There are loads of places to visit; The Needles, Osborne House, Blackgang Chine, Godsill, Carisbrook Castle, Robin Hill Adventure Park, Amazon World, the zoo.....
Beaches are lovely, every town as the usual arcades and cafes and ice cream parlours.
One pub that is an absolute must is White Mouse Inn, Chale. http://wightmouse.co.uk/ It serves delicious food, has amazing gardens and views and a converted barn which is now soft play for the kids.

There's loads to do! We're here at the moment, as PIL live here, we're regular visitors. Best thing to do is pick up the tourist magazines and info booklets on the ferry, they have everything listed in them, and a Map and are free. You won't get bored.

Ooo fab! We are staying at Gurnard Pines - please tell me it is lovely!!!! We normally go to a cottage or similar so we really only use it as a base so as long as it's clean I'll be happy!

I love IOW! My favourite thing to do is The Needles and I have several of those sand bottle things at home.
Model village in Godshill, The Zoo & Dinosaur museum in Sandown are just a few things to do.

I used to go every summer as one of my best friends is from there and we gatecrash her parents for a weekend! Not been able to go along since having my little ones though as we moved over here. Most of our activities are not suitable for children but we used to like going to The Needles (a friend of hers owns the little sweet shop there and it is amazing!) You must have fish and chips by the sea (that was our Saturday hangover cure), go to Blackgang Chine, it's a little dated but the children will love it. We also went to the Garlic Festival one year- no idea when it is this year though. That was interesting! And you must eat crab sandwiches! Apart from Wales, they are the best I've ever eaten over there!

Some places do good ticket deals as well - robin hill, blackgang chine and godshill model village I know do buy one entrance and the ticket lasts a week, but probably more places do too. We went to the model village today, kids loved it and the quiz you get as you go round.

We had a fab holiday there last summer. Loads to do - we didn't even make it over to the East side of the island. Garlic Farm is lovely and has a really good cafe. Carisbrooke Castle and Osborne House.
We were lucky in that we had good weather so spent a couple of days on the beach.
Liked the Needles but wasn't that impressed with Alum Bay although we did do one of the sand things.
