Catarina do you mind me asking what happened? I haven't been around long enough to know. She looks beautiful and healthy x
She has a funny hereditary blood and immune system condition, but we didn't know. Unfortunately she got slapped cheek, which unknown to us was the worst thing a child with that blood condition could get and not be treated or monitored. But we didn't know she had either the condition or the virus. Because it isn't a very common condition, and because her reaction to what was happening was so severe, the doctors were quite baffled as well. We had seen the GP numerous times, and when it all came to a head a year ago we had been told to go home and call up on the Monday for another blood test. Luckily I followed my instincts and took her to A&E and then into Paed high dependency where it took them about 15 hours to work out what was wrong and then we had to wait for the blood transfusions to kick in (afterwards the consultant told us they weren't expecting her to accept the blood as it was likely her body would reject it, that it was really the last chance saloon), there was no medicine they could really give her at that point, and she was a couple of hours away from leaving us. I'm quite glad neither me nor H truly realised the enormity of the situation until the following day when they started having debriefs with us about what happened and what the plan was from then, and we still have lots of hospital involvement and probably will for years.
It's been a stressful year, even a cold knocks her back for 6 weeks, her haemoglobin level readings are like a rollercoaster, and she has had 2 further (but not so serious and dealt with very quickly) aplastic crises and we get through oodles of antibiotics and other med, but now the winter has gone she seems brighter than she has for about 18 months, so long may that last!
