Those who know it well, what do you consider good areas to live in? Would need to be somewhere easily commutable to London and with good schools (state or public). TIA!

What's your budget?!

Depends I guess how far in to Kent you want to go. London borders or something more rural??
18/02/2013 at 11:11
We *think* we will be looking at up to £7/800k and need (actually want) at least 4 bedrooms.

Rural would be ideal. Hs parents live near Sittingbourne so I guess within an hour of there too. I don't particularly like Sittingbourne and don't want to be too close to the in laws...

my sIL lives in Kent. No idea about prices but she used to live in Biggin Hill and commuted to London. She had to drive to the nearest train station and then get the train but it was managable, this was pre children though.

Tonbridge Wells or Sevonaks would be my choices.

H can happily drive to a station if it's not too far away. Thanks Belle, will take a look.

My choices would be Staplehurst, East or West Peckham, Otford, Shoreham, West Malling, Charing, Harrietsham.

Lots to look at then! Thank you ladies (you'd think a man that grew up in Kent would have some idea of where we could settle wouldn't you!!)

Yep agree with Munchkins choices too, she's been looking recently so knows the areas off top of her head.

All are under an hour away from family too!
18/02/2013 at 11:23
So you coming back then? I thought he'd signed up for a nother couple of years over there.

I like villages so if you want something a little more built up then I'd look closer or on the outskirts of some larger towns xx
Forgot to mention some lovely places
Addington (not the one near Bromley, the one near West Malling)

38 mins to st pancras from Ashford.
I grew up in Kent and have lived all over the county but I think Ashford is great now because if the surrounding beautiful countryside and the coast.
Move to Kent!
No not coming back but have been told that we need to expect him to be based in London on return. It's possible for him to commute from where we currently live but the trains are limited. He could also look at renting or buying somewhere in central London but that means he is away form us a lot during the week again (I hope that happens less when we get home!) We have no ties anywhere in the South other than his parents in Kent so think it's best we look at options to live there. Have asked MIL to keep an eye out on properties as we are planning to sell ours next year and could potentially buy somewhere in Kent after that- I'm fed up of living at parents when we visit, really want our own place to come back to!
Villages would suit us too Munchkin as long as they are easy for us to get out to larger towns as and when we need to. I need to look at schools too as don't want to have to drive too far everyday.

That's really quick Beez, are the trains regular? I'll add to the list!
18/02/2013 at 11:43
Yes, it's fairly recent. Looks like half hourly - plus there's longer train journey to Victoria, Charing Cross, London bridge etc. And you will get loads more for your money. Look at rightmove :-) You're 20 mins from the coast too. Remember that the train is quick but it's not like Dartford where you can get a cab home if you miss the last train!

Shoreham is gorgeous, I used to work there. It's very very quiet though, literally one village shop. The school is amazing though.
Chislehurst is a few mins walk from me and it has nice bits but its very expensive for what you get iyswim, I wouldn't choose it. I also don't think the schools are brilliant (same as here). On the upside ill be right nearby ;-)
West Malling, Sevenoaks and the surrounding areas of here like Eynsford and Dunton Green are very good for commuting and are lovely village type places.
