I'm thinking of booking a weekend in London in December for H's Christmas present, can anyone recommend an area to stay in? We usually just go for a cheap travel lodge somewhere in central London when we are there but they are all really expensive at the moment so wonder if I'd be better staying a bit further out, can anyone suggest an area probably no further than 20-30mins on tube into London?

I'm not sure if the offer is on anymore bu The INdependent newspaper were doing a £20 offer with Ramada hotels one of which was at Wembley I think.

Have you tried Tune Hotels? I've stayed in a few Travelodges in and around London, but last time I was looking to book they weren't all that cheap. Tune have a few hotels in central London (Kings Cross, Liverpool Street, Paddington I think and there might be more, I forget now!) and we paid £45 for a Friday night. They're my new first stop when looking at London, the rooms are very clean and modern and I couldn't have asked for more - especially considering the price!

Thanks Belle, I'll go have a look.

I can't remember how I found out about them, they don't have a massive presence over here yet (just London and Edinburgh) but they've got hotels all over the world. Good luck finding something!

We've stayed at Mercure Hotels - we stayed in the one in Kensington last year. We got it on a special deal I think.

Anywhere n the tube within zones 1-2 will be within 20 minutes of central London. What sort f things are you planning on doing once in town? That can help decide what tube line to look for as you want an easy journey if possible. Where are you coming in from as well? That can make a difference because if you come into Kings Crss it makes more sense to look for north or east London options.
Give me some more details and I'll have a think for you

Thanks all. KittyKat - we'll be coming by train into Euston. We're not really planning on doing anything in particular - probably just a wander round Covent Garden, Hyde Park, Leicester Square, main shopping areas etc. Lots of eating and drinking really!

Ok immediately easy places to look would be on the Northern line as not only does that go from Euston but will deposit you at Leicester Square (walk to CG or change to Picadillly line for HP) or Tottenham Court Road for Oxford St. Areas like Muswell Hill, East Finchley, Belsize Park, Hampstead, Golders Green or Highgate are all possibles. Similarly look on the Victoria line at Highbury & Islington (there might be something on the Emirates stadium page for local hotels as that is near there) or go south to Victoria or Pimlico (only 15 minutes from Euston). If no luck there, I'd look east and try hotels in the City. Reason being they're normally geared up for business clients so will be busy during the week and may have deals at the weekends (you can get round to Liverpool Street, Farringdon, Aldgate etc by walking 10 minutes max from Euston to Euston Square). Failing that I'd look at places on the Picadilly line or consider going further out.
My last tip would be to check on the tfl.gv.uk website for details of any planned tube closures as it will be a complete nightmare if you've planned somewhere and then the tube isn't working particularly if it isn't working on the Saturday.
Have fun! If you need anything else shout out - usually found over on DTTC if I don't come back here and you need to prod me :)
