How do you feel about footing the alleged £10 million bill for the funeral and high security surrounding it?
This is quite interesting:

I'm torn. Really torn.
It is a lot of money obviously. I think if the economic climate wasn't so awful at the moment, it wouldn't sound so much.
She was never going to go quietly though...
16/04/2013 at 22:27
I really don't get why she's having such a big funeral anyway. She was such a divisive figure. Bloody Tories just want the pomp and circumstance.
16/04/2013 at 22:31
I agree DS. I don't actually mind the tax payer footing the bill given she was an important (use the word loosely) public figure. Just not that bill. Why on earth should she have all the bells and whistles?
16/04/2013 at 22:39
Disgusting, in this economy I thing it's really rubbing salt in the wound for all that are struggling and paying taxes. Also being who she is and how she splits opinion I find the whole thing wrong.
17/04/2013 at 03:47
Completely agree DS. I think considering how divided opinion is of her, the funeral is going to be very excessive. That money could be better spent elsewhere.

I'm happy for her to have a big funeral. She was an important, ground breaking public figure, the like of which we haven't seen since. £8million is peanuts to our country's budget. She was elected as PM 3 times, first woman PM, etc. She WAS special in that respect.
I do however wish that the idiots protesting about it and causing trouble would stop to think how much the extra police bill is costing for them to protest about spending that money- H pulled a 16hour shift on Saturday going from Wembely idiots to Trafalgar Sq idiots and has been called in as extra for today as well. Who do they think is paying the massive overtime bill?
17/04/2013 at 08:10
I don't have any strong feelings for Thatcher either way but I don't think we should be paying for a big funeral, I don't think it's appropriate given the state of the economy and I certainly don't think £8 million is peanuts. That money could be far, far better spent. She died a private individual and should have a private funeral, I don't think any of it is necessary.
17/04/2013 at 08:45
I think that it is wrong, really wrong. She brings out such strong emotions in people. If only for the sake of her family and friends, she should have had a quiet send of without the risk of it being disrupted. She was all for privatisation, so it should be private.
Part of me doesn't think that they are idiots protesting either Cat TBH, if it gets violent, yes maybe they could have done it better, but these people had their whole neighbourhoods destroyed by her policies and even though they are younger and a lot of them never saw her being PM, they saw their whole families ripped apart and living ion poverty still to this day. Proud men that went to work having to get handouts, suicides, mental health problems and the rest. I do think as well that it was MT that caused this, not her cabinet after reading a lot into it over the last few days.

Catarina I couldn't agree with you more.
Where else would this money go in reality because it wouldn't be given back to the tax payer in any way would it?!
17/04/2013 at 09:13
Ah yay, the makings of a good old fashioned OT debate
17/04/2013 at 09:16
I disagree Fi. The people I've seen protesting are swampy soap dodgers - rent a mob if you like. I've not seen any miners families, or those directly affected. Just good old trouble makers. I'd imagine those directly affected are raising a glass today, but certainly not fighting and causing riots in London.
17/04/2013 at 09:17
No Belle, but it's madness that it is being spent in the first place. I know that they are not going to give us more teachers, nurses etc, but still, £10 mill for someone who incites so much hatred with a lot of the UK is so very very wrong.
I agree with Catarina.
At the end of the day she made history in our country and did many good things as well as bad. If you was to get political about things then you may want to look at the labour party for helping our country become what it is today!
The money for her funeral has actually been put aside for a long time (yes I know this for a FACT!) and it would not be going back to the "money pot" so to speak anyway. We have had other events in the last few years such as the royal wedding and the olympics which have been paid for from tax payers money and not caused such a fuss. It was planned for her to lie in state at westminster but as she did not want this it has not happened, only that she has returned there to the underchapel.
Regardging the cost of security, if it makes London a safer place then so be it, her funeral whereever it was and whenever it was would need this kind of security, what they have done is made the event in London, on practiced routes which the security forces are equiped to deal with.
She could not have a private funeral if she wanted it, it would have been impossible.
As for the policies she implemented affecting people in a bad way, it also affected people in a good way. there are two sides to the coin!
17/04/2013 at 09:19
Fair enough, you have actually seen them, but how do you know that they are not miners sons or something like that. I am not raising a glass to her death, I would never do that to someone dying, especially an old lady that died on her own, but I won't be shedding a tear.
17/04/2013 at 09:20
Hear Hear CW!
Fi where else would the money have gone? Politicians expenses? And CW has just pointed out this money has been put aside for some time so that actually makes me feel better especially after the tax I've paid this morning
17/04/2013 at 09:21
Haha Cat, a good debate lol. At least it is getting board going.
I would rather it have went to Politicians expenses TBH lol
17/04/2013 at 09:26
Never gonna happen Fi as the Tories and Labour party would not agree ! LOL
17/04/2013 at 09:27
Lol, good point CW.
