I've had a rummage through all my old jewellery boxes and come up with a nice little box full of goldy looking stuff. I'm going to take it down to the jewellers at lunchtime to see if they'll buy any. Anyone else done this? How will they check if it's gold? Does it have to have a hallmark? I've already eliminated the chains that were sticking to a magnet

Pingu I used this company and got such a good deal. They had been recommended on Deadwood more than once. It was so quick too, all completed within a week (sending gold to them and payment in my bank)
Since my H works in a jewellery shop and they buy gold I should probably know, but I'm not really sure how they do tell - I'm sure he's told me before. I hope they give you a good price for it x

The trouble is that I'm not sure how much of it (if any!!!) really is gold or just cheap stuff. That's why I thought I'd go into a jewellers and they can look at it for me, do you think that's a good idea?

My stuff was all Lizzie Duke Argos specials. We got over a grand! You send it off they call or email you with a price and you then decide if you want to accept and sell.

Sounds a good idea to me, I'm all for supporting local independent jewellers

If they dont know what carat it is, they make a scratch, then add some liquid, which reacts. Thats what the bloke did to some of my Mums anyway.
I took some old jewellery yesterday, mainly silver though, just 1 9ct chain, and got £52.
My Mum took some of her old rings and got £630, so well worth doing.

GB that's sad - did you get it back.
I got £80 from a loads of odd earrings and hideous necklaces and bracelets.

We got money back off the insurance. But of course not for everything they took. It happened in Feb 2011 and just last month I remembered about a jewellery back which had a few necklaces in.
We did get a canny old amount for stuff mind. Sad though as they took irreplaceable sentimental stuff too.
