Was hanging out the washing today and I could smell a nasty niff. The girl next door was cleaning up their dogs' doings and I thought it was just pongy dustbins,so thought no more.
Lunchtime I was putting the recycling out and the smell was worse. It wasn't our bins,it was coming from this gap at the back of our shed where we've got "clean rubbish"- boxes, old bricks, broken things waiting for the tip. There was a really bad smell so I was brave and took a sneaky peek under the wheelbarrow. There was something big and furry,so I thought,so I was a silly girly and ran and got Darren, fully expecting him to laugh at me cos it was something silly like a paint roller
Armed with a big spade he poked the furry thing a bit then pulled it out.It was a huge grey dead rat
The "clean rubbish" is going tomorrow and I'm getting a big bottle of disinfectant ,that's so horrible.I cleared a dead mouse up TOD but this thing was the size of a small cat.

There's no food rubbish. It's all in bins with lids. It's all just stuff too big for the bin.Don't know what it was eating to get so big.Guess the rubbish was just a comfy home.Next door have a pond,an aviary and their dogs are often out,and the other side is flats, their garden is just wild, don't think it's been used in years, and behind us there's an alleyway with a building that's used for functions, parties and stuff like that.I suppose it's a downside to living in town.
Bit scary though,I suppose I just disinfect everything and use the bait box we found when we moved in.We had housemice in our old house when we moved in there. It took years to get them under control, but we managed to get them confined to the loft.Occasionally you'd get a couple come out but they were little, still scary but not the size of a small cat.
Not sure you can rat proof your garden.

i watched something on sky a while back, rats dont die where they live, hope thats a comfort. and also the bloat when dead, and if it smelt had been dead a little while so hopefully theyre not giant ones running around too close, we get feild mice in the garden, quite cute, just dont come near me!!!
to add to the ew list, not quite so bad but anyway.
We have a pop up stair gate upstairs so when jacks is asleep its on his door but when hes up its on my room so he can play in his room when he pleases (he cant undo the bathrooom yet) anyway i was settling lola in our room for her nap, and hear him potter upstairs, he comes throughs her blanket over the gate (stupid mother isnt covering his sister up) and tuts and sighs!!! i then assume hes in his room and a few mins later he potters back down to play, when i go down i find him sat with mine and roos toothbrushes and the carex hand soap, brushing his teeth! very proud of himself too!

Yuck.I suppose share and share alike.Bathrooms are a minefield of naughtiness.
Once caught Whirly cleaning the loo with Daddy's toothbrush. She'd seen me use an old one to do that and thought she was helping.Lucky I had a spare.

Oh Jo,that's horrible!!!!! Suprised a rat came so close to where dogs are next door-obviously a brave urban rat-dude!!!!!
I kept rats years ago,so they don't worry me too much-on saying that, they don't worry me when I know where they are!!!!!!!!!! And wild ones are a tad bigger!!!!!!
Traps to kill them are only way-and not nice, but essential if you want rid. I heard a rumour that if your'e in a city your'e never more than 10foot away from a rat!!! EW!!!!!
Doubt they're living there as no food source-but don't blame you moving the bricks and stuff!!!!!!!!!!
Only 1 thing makes me go EW-FROGS AND TOADS!!!!!! OMG I hate them,1 hopped into my kitchen years ago, just about to scream and puke when my spaniel ate it that was a huge EEEEWWWWW the squelching was horrible-felt rough for days!!!!!
12/09/2009 at 22:18
That's gross. Can't stand frogs or toads either.Don't want to think about the dog eating one.Massive eewww just thinking about it.
We cleared the garden, used the bricks to make little stands for each bin so water can run under them and it's easier to keep clean round them(BIL's theory,I'm not arguing he helped clear the rubbish). We also blocked all the gaps under the shed with bricks. We're holding off on the bait box cos it might just bring another one in,and I don't like the idea of the poison being where the kids might get at it.I've no problem with murdering the beasties we got used to that in our old house.Just can't stand them dead or alive.Just hoping this was a one off.

Bin idea sounds good actually-cleaning and looking for unwanted visitors!!! Thta was nice of him to help, glad you sorted it,I wouldn't want poison around either.
Felt sick just remembering that incident-this was the same dog that used to eat rabbits, frogs, any roadkill-then try and jump on your knee and lick ya face EEEEWWWW

I'm so glad we have a no pet clause in our lease.Dogs can be so yucky.Nice company but you really don't wanna know where they've been before they lick your face.
Suppose the same goes for kids
