I have a christening to go to in early March and have no idea what to wear, I'm Godmother as well, so needs to be nice but appropriate.
I'm frumpy a size 18-20 with HUGE thighs. I'd love to wear a dress but I don't think I can pull it off.
Pretty please can anyone help?

OK Mrs, you CAN wear a dress. I am bigger than you, and wear dresses ALL. THE. TIME. Not for everyone, but I wear a lot of 1950's style dresses.
What kind of things do you like, that you think you can't pull off?

I was gona suggest a fifties style dress. Like a Lady V one.

have you got anyone you can go shopping with? it helps sometimes to have the chance to try stuff on and have a friend give you a confidence boost. high heels always help too!

You could wear a dress.
Claire Richards has a new collection out - www.fashionworld.co.uk/.../show.action
Otherwise, Gemma Collins actually has some really nice dresses www.gemmacollinsofficial.com/.../index.php

AK- I actually do love 1950'2 style dresses. My problem is that I'm so prone to stretch marks I have stretch marks behind my knees so can't wear anything knee length.
Rod - I will have a look at the 50's style, as I do like them. I just don't want to look like a sack of spuds.
Carole- That's not a bad idea, I do have a friend I could go shopping with, argh, I'm going to need to get heels too arn't I? Thanks.
Sshh - Thank you for the links, off to have a look now :-)

You could wear tights to cover the stretch marks.

I prefer dresses, I think, even at my biggest, it gives me shape (and hides the bits I hate) where trousers just wouldn't. Grips and flows in all the right places, so I vote Priddy Dress too! :)

P - I do to. You could wear tights with it though???
03/02/2014 at 11:45
Tights! Of course, black or skin coloured? Thanks Snow White
Counter - I've never been a dress wearer, I don't know why but I have the thought that they'd make me look huger.
Ok, so I'm going to go with a dress, with tights, and some heels, of some sort. Now I've just got to try and find it all!
03/02/2014 at 11:47
AK - just saw your comment re: the tights, like I said to SW, I'll go with tights. Do I go skin coloured (thinking they will still be somewhat see through?) or Black?
03/02/2014 at 11:54
I have the same issues as you and I would go with a dress with tights, thicker clear tights will cover stretchmarks or if not go with black. I normally draw attention to my better bits (like my chest! ) and hide the other bits with a looser style skirt like HK has suggested.

With my 50's style dresses, I wear either "natural" tights, which I have never had a problem with them showing my stretch marks, or seamed tights. Although, at NYE, as I wore a plain black dress, I wore berry coloured tights.

If you wear tights you can get the ones with tummy control for extra support - the ones they sell in Primark are amazing!
03/02/2014 at 12:22
Sshh - Tummy control tights, i like the sound of them!
AK- I think id feel more comfortable in black tights, where do you get your 50's dresses from? ATM the only place i can seem to find them are Ebay?
03/02/2014 at 12:30
or ebay. I bought my dress off there, that I wore for my wedding.
03/02/2014 at 12:38
I've found this dress www.ebay.co.uk/.../120780437129
Would black tights go? And what on earth do I do about shoes?
03/02/2014 at 12:56
Nina - I think i'd have to wear nipple tassles to draw attention away from my not so nice bits!
03/02/2014 at 12:57
Shoes wise I'd suggest closed toes with black tights and a low heel if you're not used to wearing them.
What about up top? I don't like my arms so tend to wear little shrugs wraps when I'm out. You might like your arms, but if not it's an option that won't look too bulky and hide the dress
03/02/2014 at 13:04
BLL - I'll look for them. I'm not a "thin" heel person, but height isn't too much of a problem. I also have stretch marks on my arms, around the back of my arm pits, so I'll probably go for a thinish black cardigan?
